I need abit of expert advice on an XBOX I was given .

It has the E65 error code. I understand from looking around that this is due to a bad flash on the DVD drive ?.

I haven't yet opened the xbox up to look at the drive type, but in thoery could I just replace the dvd and get up and running ?

I dont think its as easy as that, I remember a friend of mine had to replace his and he had to use the same make/model as the one that was there and had to flash the original/same firmware on it.

How old is your xbox?

I remember something about the new firmware not being compatible with the old drives and that if the old drives had problems you were eligible for a free upgrade to a 360s.

Obviously this is assuming you haven't flashed your drive with custom firmware at any point.

I think that you're thinking about some of the old drives not being compatible with a format that some new games are going to be using in the future, which doesn't sound like the OP's problem.

Does the DVD Drive open when you press the eject button, OP?

Yes the dvd drive will open fine, I get a brief green flash of the logo and then the black screen with the E65 error.

I've been given this by a mate free as its screwed so if i can get it working its win/win for me :D

As to what has been done to it firmware wise, i'm unclear. He muttered something about microsoft firmware that stops Xbox working. So I'm not sure if he had custom firmware on there (although I wouldn't be suprised).

fix a lot of these,

the drive has the wrong firmware and the latest microsoft update has detected it,

not much you can do unless you can get hold of the orignal drive / or firmware to flash to a clean drive..

Thanks, from what i've seen I can't just flash the firmware to a new drive with out extracting the key from the old drive
