hi

when i eventually get an xbox elite, i will proberly get the hd dvd drive add-on as well.

my question is is the hd drive just for watching movies or do you also use it for playing games?

cheers

ok cheers so if i had the elite for hd movies i use the hd addon and for games i would still use the elite consoles drive?

also one more thing my plasma tv is a panasonic 37" pv500 , i heard once that a lot of hd tvs only produced up to 720p and not the full 1080p is there a difference?

cheers

Yes, the normal drive would still be used for games.

I am not sure what your TV does, but I think it does 1080i but almost certainly not 1080p. Some people say there is a big difference, but I think they are overstating it. 720p is a big step up from 480p and the improvement to 1080p is far less. It sure is nice if you have it, but not something to worry too much about IMHO.

I don't get why the Elite doesn't come with a HD Drive.

If it's supposed to be Microsofts answer to the PS3 then why not boost the media capabilities.

All your paying for is a bigger hard drive and a black case. Luckily some retailers are doing some good deals so it's not too much of a rip off.

Both the 42" Pv500 and the 37" PV500 are only 720P and 1080i.

Whilst the HD DVD drive in conjunction with an older premium system or an Elite version of the Xbox360 will give you up to and including 1080P.

Panasonic have a comparatively low contrast range on this set compared to other makers of Plasma. Most plasma screens will give you a contrast ratio of 10000:1 the PV500 only offers 3000:1
It must be one of their earlier Vierra screens. Although I have lost faith in Panasonic since they have stopped doing decent sound systems. The last sound system I had from Panasonic was an SA-HE70 which I purchased 7 years ago and it is still going strong. Before that I always purchased the Technics range from Panasonic. I'd never Buy one of their Plasma screens.
Getting back on the issue Your screen will give you a maximum of 720P or 1080I. If I were you I would select the 720P to prevent flicker. 1080i is interlace mode and will inevitably give you flicker especially in sports or High action stuff. 99.9% of all games are in 720P anyhow so you should not have any problem with games.
MS and the HD DVD are totally different entities. There are no plans to put games on HD DVD and there will not be untill a particular format across all video formats is adopted. Come back in a Year's time and MS maybe releasing a Blu Ray DVD player. It is still too early to call. Lat week we only had one studio supporting HD DVD. This week 2 more have come over to the HD DVD side. So who knows. The only problem Sony has is selling the PS3 as an Entertainment centre within a budget when for £700 you can buy a media centre including the TV. A PC based Media centre can offer a lot more than a PS3 with the added bonus of a built in DTV recorder etc. etc. And if you happen to have an Xbox360 with HD DVD; you have the added bonus of the media extender software and HD DVD which if brought as a seperate entity would cost around £350 for a 1080P Toshiba EP1.
