Xbox headset trouble.

I've been having some serious trouble with my wired Xbox headset for ages now, and it's got to the point where I can't take it anymore.

Basically, I've been through a few headsets, controllers and even consoles and still had this problem.

I have to speak extremely loudly or have the mic literally in my mouth for people to hear me over Live. This leads me thinking that it is a network fault but my NAT is open and always has been, I never have any trouble joining games and even on my computer torrents etc download super quick and the port for them is always open.

Does anyone have ANY idea what could be the problem? It really is driving me mad, I just bought Left 4 Dead and would really like to use my headset more on it. Also Reach is around the corner which is even more of a reason to get this sorted.

have you tried adjusting the settings, i had a similar problem untill i put the mic volume up to 10. (not 100% sure how i did it, but it will be in the system settings some place)

i have had the same problem, can i ask have you tried different headsets?
i picked up a newer headset that comes with the slim (though i'd be clever) but im wondering if there's something up with them. even if i take the fuzzy sponge off the end its still quiet for my mate to hear too. ps i havent solved it sometimes it works fine other times its really quiet he says.

I know you said your NAT was open but have you forwarded these ports in your router (and given a static IP to your 360):

TCP 80
UDP 88
UDP 3074
TCP 3074
UDP 53
TCP 53

Alternatively, just add your 360's static IP to the DMZ of the router

Networking is the worst area in my tech knowledge, could you go into some more detail please? Why do I need to do this for starters?

Thanks.

Edit: Right, so I've spent the last few hours trying to sort this. I've connected my 360 through an Ethernet cable to my router, then I tried over Wi-Fi, and finally directly to my modem. The issue was still there, I done what you said and forwarded the ports and after that tried the DMZ mode but it didn't work. (I even turned my routers firewall off)

Is there any chance this could be a problem with my modem or something to do with Virgin media? When I record a voice message even talking quietly my headset picks it up but as soon as I enter a game I need to shout, I remember my friend saying my voice breaks up all the time over private chat too.
