Xbox joypad connection

Hi
Everything works fine except I've to plug it in every time I switch my PC on or should I say the joypad doesn't stay recognised and I have to replug it in.
Am I missing something?

If you turn your pc on with the pad plugged in and use the centre X button (home is it?), does the pad turn on?

What USB port do you normally use for it?
