Apologies for the poor pictures but it will help explain my problem.

I got a Samsung 223 BW Monitor.

The monitor has two inputs VGA and DVI. I am trying to use a HDMI Switch for both my PC and my XBOX 360.

I got this switch: It has got 2 inputs

input 1 = goes to PC via HDMI to DVI cable

input 2 = goes to xbox via HDMI to HDMI cable

It all works fine when I switch between the inputs without this plugged in:

i.e pressing the buttons when I press 1 it goes to the PC

when I press 2 it goes to the xbox

but as soon as I put this cable in:

the one on the left hand side (component cable) - I need this in because it lets me have sound.

When that cable goes in every time I switch between the two inputs the XBOX will restart. As you can imagine this is annoying.

I need the component cable plugged in because I run optical sound into my logitech head unit.

Is there a way around this? What other way can I get sound on to my xbox without that component cable?

I think there is an official HDMI adapter which is like the Component one which has the Optical out. It's just as pricey as the Official VGA cable though. You're looking at around £20 for it.

do you know if I got that cable would I get away with plugging in just the HDMI cable and plugging optical into my sound but not putting in the component? Will it work like that?

Damn did you see my mod? I broke that plastic case off to save a bit of cash.

You get an adapter with the official HDMI cable that replaces your component monstrosity. ;)

oooh sounds good that is my solution then

only bugger is the price it's coming up at around 30 quid! :(

But wait is this the cable:

and

See the bottom picture if that is the cable you mean how will that work?

It still needs to be plugged into the xbox component. It is exactly the same as my modded cable except my cable don't have phono.

will that thing not restart then when plugged in while the xbox is powered on?

There is a switch on my one at home -what does it do?

Thanks.

That's the right cable.

It's designed to work with the HDMI cable so it's got a thinner plug, which allows you to plug both that, and the HDMI cable in at once (without removing the casing).

I highly doubt you'll get the issue rebooting using it.

I don't think anyone can vouch for it as its a very rare problem you seem to be having. Perhaps your current modded Component cable is shorting out on the case some where/how?

If that is the official component HD AV cable then open up the plug and there should be a black wire looping from pin 28 to pin 26, you need to cut that and then make sure the switch is set to TV mode not HD.

This is a problem everyone that uses a modded cable of any sort for audio with HDMI has.

I got myself a cheap 360 scart cable with optical out on it and completely gutted it so all that is left is the optical Port.

you wont be able to use the cable to send video anymore:P

unless you reconnect the wire.

woaah thanks for clearing that up

I shall have a look into that eventually I only need that cable for sound but I shall get another replacement for my SD TV.

Where is the best place to cut this wire? in the middle or ends?

Hold on pin 28 is unused, is there a risk involved with my xbox doing this thing?

IT says unused but it is connected to something inside the xbox.

Here is the remains of my scart cable that i got for the optical audio port, i used a wiring diagram of the audio dongle with the official HDMI cable to make this.

on top we have only pins 25,27 and 29 for optical audio.

bottom we have pins 20, 22 and 24 connected this prevents the reboot upon switching video source.

and the finished artical, working optical audio and no reboots

thanks for the pictures and input.

were you in a similar position to me?

I shall go about breaking the connection from pin 26 to 28.

It's a very well known problem with the modded cable. The official version has no rebooting issues during the HDMI handshake.

Edit: Cutting the black wire loop also works fine for preventing the reboot issue (just done it :p).

It works, I didn't check the pin numbers as there's glue everywhere in my component cable but I just cut the only black loop that was there.
