Xbox Kinnect vs Wii Fit vs any others

OK, most games here seem to exersise nothing but the thumbs, but I really need more whole body exercise for both fitness and flexibility, and of course it might amuse the cats as well. :)

My living room is a good size, I have a nice new LCD TV, it occured to me that an Xbox plus Kinnect might be the way to go. So far it seems most of the things I've read prefer it over the Wii Fit - no balance board, nothing to have to hold.

Any thoughts from anyone out there? Is there anything else I should be considering? And for anyone that has used this, any suggestions as to the best games for this? By best I'm not concerned about measuring and statistics, but how well they work and how well they flow. Want to be able to set up a 20-minute session and not have to fiddle with the menus while it runs and I puff.

Im sure this may sound harsh but dont waste your time with fitness games, just get down to the gym or play some sport. People kid themselves that these fitness games can really replace proper structured exercise...

Probably not what you wanna hear so Im prepared to be ignored :)

Yep, because all you do on the kinect fitness games is stand still and wave your arms about...

Owning both systems, for fitness and dance games, basically real movement, kinect kicks crap out of the wii.

People who have not actually used these games kid themselves that they don't actually do anything.

They do, I would recommend trying is the UFC one, on the higher levels its more like a circuit training class like you would do at any gym and it works you up to it.

Yourself fitness is pretty good as well from what I have heard, a girl I know lost just under 4 stone working her way through it.

Both me and the missus have tried using the Wii and Kinect to get fit and neither of them compares to going for a run, bike ride or getting to the gym. If you're serious about getting fit then look elsewhere, spend the money on a bike or something instead.

That said, of the fitness games we tried we found Your Shape Fitness Evolved (Kinect) was structured best, was pretty accurate and gave a reasonable (but not great) workout so if you're set on using a console then that would be my recommendation. The Wii Fit board really is pretty basic in terms of what it tracks, Kinect is miles ahead for actually tracking your whole body.

Personally I hate running as I find it boring so I either cycle or I use a crosstrainer and put some TV shows on my iPhone and watch those at the same time.

Cycling scares me - all the traffic - plus I live north of Edinburgh and finding decent weather during daylight in the winter at the weekends is often very difficult, and it's 10 miles each way to anywhere with any sports facilities from where I live.

So, I reckoned something with a console will be a lot better than nothing.

the UFC one

Hadn't come across that one, will look into it. Thanks. I don't expect to get super-fit, but anything is better than nothing, and if there is something with flexibility stuff as well that wouldn't go amiss.

I've got Your Shape Fitness Evolved, and I found it to be quite good.

The reason I say it's good is because provided you've got your own dumbbells, you can do a scheduled routine using the weights. The 'Personal Trainer' also tracks your moves via Kinect so can make sure your form is smooth.

I found it works up a sweat, but ultimately it's a tool to combine with other exercise. I think if you don't have access to a gym, but fit in Running/Swimming/Cycling with it, then it can be quite good.

Probably good for really fat people/inactive people to start off but they are useless for tubby people, ask yourself, do you want to change your lifestyle and get heather and fitter?

If you do, a gimmick is not for you. Spend £200 on a console just to "try" and lose weight/getting fit is ridiculous.

If I was to choose probably kinect as it's the most accurate(but never tried it), I would only invest money if you plan to use it for games also and you're dedicated, it's very useful for keeping a route and tracking.

Load of tosh, EA Sports active 2 is a damn good workout, no different to any circuit training I've ever done at a gym using your own body weight for resistance, add in some decent resistance bands and it's a great program.

Like any exercise though, you get out what you put in.

But do you need to spend £40 on EA Sports active 2 when a simple internet site will have all the info you need for free.

Fitness is whatever works for you. Some people hire personal trainers for a lot of money simply because, even though they know how to work out, trainers give them an extra motivation to do so, and to work hard. Splashing out on a game may do something similar.

For me, I'd rather play some sport and go running, but each to their own.

This. I've said it before but I did the EA Sports Active 2 medium 12 week program, loads of Dance Central and Kinect Adventures and then extra work outs with Your Shape and lost 25lbs earlier this year.

EA Sports Active is currently £22.41 at a well-known on-line retailer. However it has some pretty awful reviews - not sure how many of them are post-patch...

A shame I didn't make use of the demonstrater that was in Asda at the weekend. Maybe I should go along and see if it's still there...

They did this on the Gadgetshow the other week, Kinect came out on top, because unsurprisingly it tracks your whole body, so the work outs tend to be more rounded and enforced etc..

Move/Wii all suffered from the same issues, lack of tracked body parts, and it's very easy to buck the system..

Put shoes on, open the front door, put one foot in front of the other at an increased pace, keep doing that for 40 minutes, come home and have a shower and play a real game.

That way you will get an actual better workout and get to play a good game.

( I have a Kinect + Zumba etc fyi)

As I said, you get out what you put in, if you're going to cheat the system then don't even bother starting.

How about you put a 20kg backback on and run for an hour, you'd get an actual better workout than yours, and you'd be able to run some junk up to the lcoal dump too...

Of course you could go out for a run, same could be said for anybody using a treadmill at the gym. Exercise is exercise regardless of where or how you do it. I'm at a complete loss as to why we have so many exercise snobs around, all exercise is good exercise.

Al Rescate!

Walking for 40 minutes can't really do the same as a high energy work out, it's all down to motivation, someone who can't be bothered exercising is no more likely to because of Kinect, it's more convenience with not having to go down the gym and pay a membership.

With the right frame of mind there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to get a good workout at home.

If your going to buy something for this purpose then technology wise Kinect is the one to go for. However, it does require more room than the Wii so you may have to take that into consideration.

I would echo others in saying it wont replace more traditional exercise activities but has to be better than nothing.
