One of my mates has just got a xbox 360 and is having problems connecting to live. He sent me this email, as I'm at work and cannot surf too much(websensed) I am going to post his query here in the hope you can help.

"Ok mate here goes. Can't get on to xbox live. So i'll pick your brain(if that's all right) and see if I can get this fixed without phoning 'em up.

I figure the best option is to use the ethernet cable? I don't have a router, just a bt DSL modem. I want to have internet access as well as be on xbox live at the same time. Am I right in saying the ethernet goes from the xbox to the PC??(just checking in case i've made a major **** up!) I unplugged everything connected it and it won't let me connect.

I configured the ICS to enable it to share the connection. What am I missing?

Just one thing, the Local area connection, I have 2. One is connected and one isn't? The one that isn't says that a network cable is unplugged? No idea what it means. It sits with a small red cross on it. It has always been like that, but since I have never had any issues with it or never used it I never bothered. "

Any ideas guys? I can get more info if needed.

The RJ45 drivers are they motherboard specific or Modem specific. In other words to find the driver on google do I need to ask him his mobo or Modem?

He has no exclamation marks which would seem to suggest the RJ driver is installed?

Hes just finding out now what his mobo is.

So he may need a crossover cable, that would be UTP right? So I just google UTP cross over cable. How much are these usually roughly?

Thanks Guys for the help, this is my best bet as my mate lives about 300 miles away.

A cross over cable is because he's not using a router?

Hmm it maybe more of a problem than that, talking again to my friend, even if he just plugs into the modem with the xbox supplied ethernet cable to the xbox he still cannot connect to live.

Anymore ideas?

Edit when I suggested ethernet to ethernet with no pc involved he said

"The ethernet on the modem is a different size. Tried that already
What is a bit strange is that when I go into the 'test xbox live connection' bit, it was saying disconnected at the network adapter. Now it is saying wired, but saying the ip address failed.

I'm stumped because it was **** easy for me and everyone else I know.

Right I think Ive got the problem? He is using a BT voyager 105 Adsl Modem. This has no ethernet port for connection just USB and RJ11...

General Device Type DSL modem
Device Type DSL modem
Enclosure Type External

Expansion / Connectivity Interfaces 1 x modem - ADSL - RJ-11 ¦ 1 x USB - 4 PIN USB Type B

So now is the only way a router or maybe its worth getting in touch with BT for a change of modem?

Thanks very very much guys, I really need this guy online asap so I can whup him ;)

Cheers I linked him the forum thread, hopefully tommorow he can stop all the playing with himself ;)
