Can`t log in either on the 360 or the website, looks like a wide spread prob.....Typical,at home today and i`ll have to resort to reading a book! :D

Xbox Live has come down with a nasty case of the gremlins, as users report difficulties signing into the service via both Xbox 360 consoles and their desktops.

"We are aware of the problem and are working to resolve the issue," reads a note on the Xbox Support status page. "We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience."

Update: Just had a statement through from Microsoft PR.

"We're aware that some users may be experiencing difficulty logging in to Xbox LIVE at present. This does happen from time to time while updates and fixes are made to the system and should not be symptomatic of any larger problems.

"A service update can be found on Xbox.com, alerting Xbox LIVE users to the current state of the service. I don't have an update on timeframe for service to resume as usual, but we are working on the problem."

Update numero duo: There's a rumour doing the rounds that Xbox Live has been hacked. It's based on the say-so of a lone Gamespot forumite, apparently, and smells strongly like an absolute load of cobblers.
