Xbox Live Free......

i had an idea about everybody paying an extra tenner on there xbox games but we got dedicated hosts for the games with larger fanbase / suitability for high number of players.

for example 32 man servers for cod etc. id be happy to pay it for them to stick a load of dedi servers up.

i mean ea surely must do it for battlefield etc.

I dont really notice the advertising tbh, most of it is pretty useful and reminds me what new films are coming out and stuff.

same, Theres often moments I see something and get the urge to purchase it. Aslong as it stay Xbox orientated i'll be happy, Moment I see adidas trainers, I'll be a little less happy :p

The adverts annoy the hell out of me. NXE has more adverts than the old dash and I think this is unfair as we are already paying to use Live :(.

A lot of sites have adverts for free users and none for paid users. MS should do this for Live.

Also the adverts are for movies that have been out for a while or content on Marketplace that is selling badly.

I still pay as I use it every now and then, but anyone who says it is good value for money is a chump, as there is so little you get over Silver members to make it worth the premium.

Supply and demand though, they will keep charging as long as people pay, make no mistake they can offer the same service for free if they choose and have it perform the same. If anything they are earning more money now due to more adverts etc.

You know it is a ripoff when the RRP has stayed the same since day 1 and this electronic service costs a different amount in different countries, for the same service.

Well yeah, they're useful in a "news" kinda way, but surely they could let us navigate to them on our own at least? I don't want them thrown in my face when I power the console up for a game of something. It's not on. What exactly are we paying for?

edit: Really, what are we paying for? That's not asked in a sarcastic or provocative way. Really, I'd like to know exactly what we are paying for.

And an "annoying people-free zone" doesn't count. Sure, if it were free, more snivelling oiks would be online, but I'm buggered if that counts as something worth paying money to prevent.

I dont want to browse through ther marketplace everyday to find out whats new on there. Its nice that it shows it neatly in a channel. Does it really bother you? You can very quickly navigate to another channel, it isn't like it forces you to sit througha video everytime you sign on or anything.

Quick question - if games are P2P is the VOIP channel(s) also?

If so, what is the subscription for when no real infrastructure needs to be maintained (as far as I understand it) and in reality its only the technology MS setup in the first place. Obviously that improves with updates, but they seem to making pure profit with very minimal initial outlay (for XBL).

Hell if I was MS or Sony Id ensure that all online gaming was expensive and via P2P for the next generation, as it seems the easiest way to print money compared to licensing/accrediting games (hell what MMOs do is small fry compared to how XBL is marketed and makes)

Kudos to MS - they invented the Emperors New Clothes and didnt even have to persuade people to buy them - XBL seems to be a great service but when you consider what youre paying for and the % that is profit its scary. No doubt MS will ensure XBL will always be ahead of PSN so that people cant justify wanting a free service - probably sitting on a load of ideas just waiting...

Own both consoles, as do 2 friends.

Considering some games on the PS3 have dedicated servers, I don't see why MS can't give away live for free. Sure it is cheap and all, so in that sense good value - but bad value in terms of PSN is catching up now (though it took long enough).

I don't mind paying for services, I just don't think that the extras you get is amazing enough to say that MS can charge, but I also don't think its "bad" they do.

should make Silver = Gold except make it free but then introduce Platinum where you get extra benefits like

free movie streaming/downloads (UK) per month or something (e.g. platinum users get a set quota per month of movies that can download)

Exclusive access to all HD content first (ie all movies/vids/demos platinum users get it first) But improve the amount and variety of content available.

Maybe Platinum only dedicated servers?

Maybe Platinum only dedicated servers?

That is what i think would be the best idea, dedicated servers would improve live immensely and aren't unfeasible especially considering Sony is managing to do it for free for a small number of their games. Charging people a small amount a month for access to dedicated servers for all games would be quite doable.

Why all this nonsense with comparing XBL to PSN ?. This thread about the cost of XBL and it makes me laugh when people try and justify thier £40 or £28 subs when they know full well that free > £££ in anyones book.

If they think that XBL is what it is because of thier subs then think again.

Why compare it to PSN you ask?

Because its a free direct alternative, and offers hardware infrastructure to boot.

It's a legit comparison in figuring out exactly why we should pay for the alternative, when its a p2p network

Never mind, I misread :D ignore me.
