xbox live help

hi!

last console i owned was the original psx so im well out of the loop but could do with some help

i purchased a xbox live gold sub for 1 year for a nephew for his xbox 360 and at some point xbox one

i have entered the code and its activated etc on the xbox and has downloaded patches for gta 5 and minecraft etc however...
while playing gta 5 online we didnt come across any other players?

and minecraft the "join" section and leaderboards did not list any server or score data

its a crappy ee branded router but i have tried turning off the firewall on it and also adding the xbox 360 ip to the dmz but none of this seemed to make any difference

is there something im missing ?
