Xbox live issues

Hey all, having a bit of trouble getting connected to XBL.

It appears that I am connected (for the first time) as I can scan for a user name and be told it is free.
However, upon entering my email address and password (Windows live ID), I keep on getting the error message, "XBL signup is not available at this time, please try again later". This has happened for the past 4 days.
Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?
This is going straight through the modem with a wired connection by the way, so there is not an issue with connectivity.

I believe you can create a profile on the xbox.com site and then use this to login on the xbox itself... worth a try at least!

Would work, but then you wouldn't get a free month of Gold.

I know live has been down recently for maintenance.
