Xbox live just updated

Surely the way it should be done, is to check for an update ONLY when you first turn on the console.

True, but a 'random' update would surely be more surprising for the would-be modder! If the update was always checked at switch-on, the modders would know someway of bypassing it, or in the very least, when and where the console contacts it's place of birth for a new injection of e-dna.

Hmm, perhaps, but if the update process is like Nismo says then it gives you a chance to opt-out anyway? I dunno. I admit I am all for anything which prevents piracy on consoles.

Its asks if you want to continue, so you can decline. However it does automatically pop the guide up telling you there is an update, which I can see being a pain if you are in an online game.

To me that seems the only downside of having the guide always running in the background.

Anyone know if this update changes the dashboard version? Cant remember what it was after the last update we got.

The update was to stop people reading the contents of the HDD.

I think it might be just writing to the HD. People reporting that PGR3 image extraction still works but putting on games saves dont.

either way its yet ANOTHER case of anti piracy (probably) measures affecting the legit player. RR6 is a particularily confusing game when it comes to saving etc they had no right to cause me that problem and cost me a few hours play. my console is legal, unmodified and unaltered, its not my problem if some people wanna pirate and steal. The insignificant impact this has on the industry (it's the largest emergent entertainment industry since the rise of hollywood in the 50's and 60's ffs) only serves to annoy me even more. If the police kicked in my door every day on the off chance that they'd find some evidence of petty criminality you wouldnt stand 4 it would u!? so ill be damned that were all taking it up the jacksie from some mega corp. makes me sick.

Drivle...

Jesus, get over it. So you lost some playtime, big deal.

And console piracy is not "insignificant", it was one of the main factors in killing off the Dreamcast for starters.

Fair play to MS if you ask me for trying to stay one step ahead of the illegal mod scene.

oh come on i couldnt have been more ridiculously over the top about it if i tried! pinch of salt people come on lol

HOWEVER. I dont think software piracy is significantly affecting the industry. If it was then it wouldnt be advancing at such a rate. And dont tell me that its down to anti piracy measures, the 360 is the only unchipped or emulated console and thats only because it's brand new.

5 years ago the music industry declared that piracy was ruining it, showing sales declines of up to 30%. A year later indepenent investigations revealed that many big record companies were including sales figures for cassette tapes and LP's many of which had never even been in print for the majority of modern records.

Dont make out that the entertainment industries suffer so awfully at the hands of pirates. The dreamcast had a fatal flaw, no more.

Well unlike most of the ppl here, I heartily agree :) I love the X360, but if it had rebooted my console mid-way through a game I would be mighty annoyed to - let alone losing a load of game progression. Anti-piracy should never impact on legit copies of a product - ever. Once that starts happening the anti-piracy slowly starts to have the opposite effect. I hate most anti-piracy measures. If my TV, everytime I turned it on, scanned the area around it to ensure it was in the same place I 'registered' it as being - and wouldn't turn on if I moved it, I would be ******. This is the same as downloading DRM-encoded music and putting it on a new PC, a CD player, or the like. It demands a license, and doesn't work. If my TV turned off in the middle of a good film, downloaded something from the net, and then turned back on after the movie had finished, I would also be rather annoyed.

Piracy is having a big impact though, one developer released two games, one with anti-piracy, one without (on the PC). The end result? The only way to be profitable is to put anti-piracy protection in. Game development costs too much nowadays.

The Dreamcast didn't have a fatal flaw at all. Well other than a lack of good marketing in the EU.

Anti-Piracy is rapidly approaching a realm where the person's rights are no longer even considered, let alone respected.

Well id consider zero anti-piracy in the hardware pretty fatal lol, imagine if people could just stick any disc in a read-writer and copy it! madness.

But im glad u see my point

Sorry, I completely got the wrong end of the stick with regards to your comment about the DC: "Dont make out that the entertainment industries suffer so awfully at the hands of pirates. The dreamcast had a fatal flaw, no more.". I thought you meant the DC had a fatal flaw OUTSIDE of the lack of copy protection. Or something, I really don't know what I was thinking :\

The DC did have copy protection, and you couldn't just copy its discs with a CD burner - just in case anyone here thought that you could or can. Its achilles heel was that it could read CDR discs without needing to be modded.

Which amounts to much the same thing m8.
