Ive been a keen pc online gamer for nearly 10 years , but recently thought about moving over to xbox360

with regard to multiplayer games on xbox live , how are the games hosted ? is it on dedicated servers or more like P2P (read IWNET for Mw2) with each player hosting on their machines ?

if its anything like iwnet is for pc now thats one thing that would REALLY put me off moving over to xbox live for my online gaming needs

Most are P2P I believe.

But, most games are pretty lag free from what I know. I haven't played on live in about a year, my sub ran out and I've been too busy with single player games / PS3 to renew it :p

Most , if not all are P2P however it's no where near as bad as you think :p Sometimes there's just an appalling host but most of the time it's fine :)

One key is to host the games yourself. 10MB connection is fine for all but the largest of amount of players, and 20MB should be fine for 32 or whatever with no lag.

The PS3 and 360 are pretty good when it comes to lag, with games that have had issues (like Tekken 6) generally patched to improve the netcode.

True , although in match making you can't really choose to be host , although a excellent connection will most likely result in you becoming host.

my only experience of p2p hosting has been this iwnet for mw2 (pc) and it is truely appalling, i take it the xb live system is similar to but much better than iwnet ?

I haven't experienced the PC iwnet , but I'd say the MW2 system on 360 is no worse than any other game on 360 and surprisingly good most of the time.

Its the shoddy coding thats an issue. Time after time games are released that take a month to get fixed on live.

PGR3 lobbies and mostly lag free gaming still stands up to comparison to half the **** that is still released.

2 player games are fine, even small games like fifa team matches with 10 players usually lag to ****.

It's very hit and miss, some days your fine others you can have a hell of a time just to get a game.

Download bandwidth doesn't matter, upload bandwidth and latency does.

Yeah, I know. :) As in the case of just about all hosting, but mostly ISP's go with download speeds on their packages. Since they scale upload with download, then it's logical the faster the download the better off you'll be.

There are some instances this works out a little odd, but for cable (which I and all my friends are on) it's how I come to look at it.

Is that for preorders only ? I need to order mine soon ;)
Thread derail there :D

To the OP , do you have a 360 or are you just wondering about buying one ?

i have a 360 , had it two years now but never really played it online
