Xbox Live Question

My Xbox live membership just ran out. But i have lost my avator thingy and it's stopped updating my gamer points on live.com. Do you really have to be a Gold member to get them?

It's just strange, i still access according to my system blade but it won't let me sign in. Going to renew it anyway
