Xbox live randomly generates usernames?

Was up at a friends, sorting out his xbox 360. He's been bought 12 months live sub, So I signed up for him. And at the end of the step by step subscription it came up with a username automatically? And it was most definately something he wouldnt have ever chosen?

Are they generated automatically now?

Yes it seems to choose one automatically but you have one free name change, so you can change it to whatever he wants, after that you have to pay 800 points which is a joke.

Yup. I thought it always did that. If a name is already registered. It'll give you something else.

Hmm, I was quite lucky. I got my forum name. Which i supposed no one else would want lol.

Just didn't realise, As what he wanted was Corz, which i suppose would obviously be taken, But the alternative it threw out was as bad as fluffykitten04 and no option to change it. That was his name!

Ah, just spotted the bit about a free name change. nice one, will let him know

it always has generated names and off course you can choose not to use it, just press back and enter another name you want. I have never heard of a free gamertag change either.

I made a new account for an acquaintaince and it named me something like YourDogOnMyBarbeque. :confused:

Sometimes it gives you quite good names. I got one suggested which was Erected Rug

That's because the auto name generation is mandatory. MS give you a name whether you want it or not. Previously you could accept it or put your own name in. But now you have to do it, they give you one free name change.

It gave me MelonBalls26 or something when I used it.

Mine came up as LousyGrain, you get a free name change.

800 gold per name change isn't a joke, it stops the servers getting clogged up so only people that are serious about changing their name will do so.

Indeed. We also have no idea what effort is required in amending a user's name. I do account management at work and it requires a lot of effort to even put through a surname change when someone gets married. You have to pay someone to do that.

Very little work I imagine. Microsoft will base their gamertag on SIDs as they do with Windows.

There is little effort and server activity involved in a name change. It's MS making money.

I would hate to have to sort out a new gamer tag now. They never release a name once its been chosen as far as I know so the pool of sensible names must be tiny and just a nightmare to find something decent.
