xbox live subscription renewal

i've just had an email saying mine will be automatically renewed on 23rd November.

if i buy a 12month card and put it on my account before then, will i still get debited?

or do i need to do something else aswell?

EDIT: do the codes that come with the old live starter packs work ok on the 360 if i can find one?

Any xbox live card will work (360 or original xbox) and this will prevent your card being debited.
