I think you get a month free.

You get 1 month free, then it reverts to Silver, unless you upgrade to Gold of course.

well i just set up the 360 for the first time and i put in the account i made on the pc and it says its a silver account

Gold, lets you play games online, Silver allows you to use the Xbox to download demos, videos, Xbox Live Arcade games etc, but can't play games online.

I did this too. IIRC, you have to create the tag on the 360 to get the month free.

It seems that way from the looks of it, as when you create a Live account on the 360, it allows the free Gold membership to be activated according to the 360's serial number I guess.
