Xbox live?

Just a quick question about live. I have one Xbox and it has live, now can i buy another Xbox for upstair and use the live with this?
Is it the user account that has the live or the console?

So could i have the account on my main machine, then switch it off then recover tag on to second machine?
But only use one machine at a time?

Right ok memory card would be best option i think, unless i get the other half interested in a PS3 for downstairs..
