I've got a 47 inch LG 3D LED TV coming this week. I don't have a Blu Ray player but I have a Xbox 360, a 2TB external HDD and a DVD player which has a USB port.

Is it possible to transfer media to my Xbox 360? if so how because I'm hoping I can use my Xbox 360 to store films and watch them on my 3D TV without buying another device.

Cheers!

As far as I'm aware when connecting USB devices, such as harddrives, flash drives etc... they are capped at 16gbs. So you can't use more than a partition that size.

You can't rip any material to the 360 Harddrive, but you can transfer individual films that play back. Alternatively, you can use the Media Center to stream movies from a computer.

I am sure that is if you use them as Xbox storage devices, if you don't then it see's full size HDD but I have never tried tbh

edit needs to be Fat32 as well

Problem is I have the Xbox Elite which doesn't have wireless built in, the router is upstairs so the only way I can do this is to have a long ethernet wire going upstairs to the router..which would be rather annoying!

You said I can't rip any material to the Xbox 360 hard drive but I can transfer films? I don't understand that :p

What about copying a few films to a USB flash drive (16GB) and then connecting it to the Xbox, could I play films off that?

If I connect the Xbox to my router with a RJ45 cable, I can watch films and media off my main computer upstairs?

You were talking about having a DVD player with a USB port, so I assumed you meant ripping from DVD.

Yes you can use an up to a 16GB FAT32 formatted flash drive, you can use any harddrive, but it has to be a 16gb partition. I believe you can transfer films from the drive to the Xbox's internal drive.

If you connect to a router you can stream from a Windows PC. I use a Mac and have to use some other software.

360 will see full size HDD, only when you convert it to being a 360 storage device will it be limited to 16gb, so no worries about that, just needs to be formatted Fat32, you don't need to convert it to a 360 storage device to stream media from it :)

So when I get the TV, I'll reformat a USB flash drive, then transfer AVI/MKV/MP4 video files to it, then connect it to the Xbox and I can play the video files straight off the flash drive?

Sorry for the confusion haha.

I can move the router in the hallway downstairs and just connect the Xbox with an ethernet cable I guess, but if I do that I could just use the Windows Media Extender and I'll be able to stream all the films straight from my main computer upstairs without needing to do anything else right? :p

The 360 won't play MKV unless it is transcoded on a PC, You can use any hard drive of any size & it'll pick up everything on it. The 16gb thing only applies if you set up a 360 partition from the Xbox itself.

You cannot copy anything onto the 360's hard drive though.

You can stream all your films from your main computer yes, If you want to play MKV just grab DIVX codec & you'll be fine :)
