Xbox 'no input' with HDMI adapter.

Hey. First off I didn't really feel like there was a specific forum for this kind of issue but I felt it suited best here.
I have an Astro headset with my Xbox, which requires an optical input on the console. I have the old elite, so therefore it didn't have an implemented Optical cable input. I bought a HDMI adapter which essentially is plugged into the socket where the component cable is usually put (which has an optical input on it) so that I could use the headset with it. All was fine just up until recently (baring in mind I've had the headset for going on 3 years) where I am now getting a 'no input' signal with my monitor. I would use the component cables but as I said, I'm using a monitor and it doesn't have the inputs. It was quite clear there is probably something going off internally which causes the Xbox to not recognise that there is a HDMI cable in there at the same time as the adapter. I was just wondering if anyone could help me without having to take the 360 apart?

Really had problems understanding that.

So it works OK via HDMI when the adaptor isn't in?

is it the Audio adaptor you have purchased? you say a HDMI adaptor why would you want that? The HDMI should go straight from the xbox to the Monitor and you should have an audio adaptor with just 2 phonos and an optical on it.

Yes I meant the Audio adapter. The Xbox will come on fine when the HDMI cable is in and the adapter isn't, but as soon as I put the adapter in I get prompted with 'No signal'. Sorry if it sounded hard to understand, was in a bit of a rush.

I used to have that setup with my old Xbox and it worked fine.. assume you've checked the usual settings in the xbox setup?

There isn't any kind of switch on the adaptor, I don't recall there being one on the one I had but you could check.

Display settings and then turn off the display detection setting. Then plug the adapter back in and it should work.

Tried. Doesn't work

It seems that it turns off as soon as I put the adapter in, then I take it out and the Xbox comres back on etc. I can only really assume it's something internally, maybe the adapter and HDMI cable are too big and pushing into each other so the console can't recognise it? I manage to get it to work after about ten minutes but then the next time I go to turn on the Xbox it stops working again. But then again, I've even removed the plastic casing around the adapter to free up some space, and still to no avail.
