Hi

Not sure where to post this, please move if this isn't the right place.

It's my sons birthday next month and he'd quite like an Xbox One...so we're all going to chip in. I no nothing about the latest consoles and wondered if there was anything that I needed to know or get before buying? Would a 500GB one be fine? There's various games being bundled with Consoles...any of these worth looking at?

I noticed last week that Microsoft's Irish website had bundles for £249 last week....but this has gone back up to £299, meh.

Thanks
Scott

I'd say it depends what he wants to play and what his friends have got. Online play is at the heart of a lot of games these days so if his friends have all got Playstations and he gets an XB then he won't be able to play with them and interest will probably wane fairly quickly.

Each console has its own merits and its own exclusives, the PS is slightly more raw grunt than the XB but with cross platform games its not going to be a deal breaker. If he's had an Xbox 360 previously MS have released backwards compatibility for the XB1 meaning there's decent range of old 360 titles that will now work on it.

GB wise you can plug an external USB HDD into the XB1 and use that as extra storage, the PS4 you can fairly easily replace the HDD inside it with a bigger one or use wn external also I believe.

As I said to start with, it mainly will come down to what he wants to play and what his friends have for the online stuff.

Thanks for taking the time to reply :)

He has an Xbox 360 and he mentioned that all of his friends have or are getting Xbox One consoles....He's definitely an Xbox fanboi. I'll ask him if there's any games he really wants and see if I can get it bundles if the price is right.

His son wants the Xbox rather than it being chose for him so presumably it's because his friends has one.

500gb is ok but be prepared to delete older games that aren't played anymore (that's if he has a lot of games), I'd say in a year or so an external drive will be needed that can be had for pretty cheap.

I'd find out the kind of games he likes before choosing a bundle.

OP said he wasn't really up on the latest consoles so was just giving a bit of advice. If he'd bought an xbox and his sons friends all then went/had PS it would have been better to grab a PS.

Anywho it looks like the friends all have XB's so it's worth checking deal sites like HotUKDeals.com to see if there are any decent offers. You can get packs with or without Kinect now if want to save a bit and don't think he'll use the features of Kinect (voice control, camera etc)

Good deal, you can get secondhand games to add to the bundle or new ones in the sales and if he needs to renew Xbox gold look for deals online. If he needs a kinnect I would buy secondhand I bought mine for £40.
