Xbox One Hardware Issues (USB?)

Hi, first time on forums.

I bought a second hand Xbox One almost three years ago but very quickly developed issues with it within 2-3 weeks. At first everything seemed to be working fine then sporadically it would not read discs and the problem got worse until it wouldn't read any discs at all and on top of that with a disc inserted it would not eject, as if it didn't even recognise a disc was even inserted. The only way to eject was to hold in or repeatedly press the eject button whilst rebooting. I've been using it only for digital downloads running off the hard drive.

The other issue which is really weird and didn't crop up till I got a USB controller and external hard drive (as I didn't have any USB peripherals attached to start with), is that the machine will not boot with any USB attachments at all, it will hang on a green screen forever. To boot the Xbox I have to remove all and any USB attachments, let it boot up then attach the external hard drive and any USB controllers. There are no issues with the USB devices themselves, they work perfectly, but with anything attached on any USB port seems to interrupt the bootup. Once booted, there are no hangs or crashes whilst using a USB device.

I don't mind so much that discs can't be read, games have to be installed to HDD anyway but it is a pain with the Boot issue having to disconnect and reconnect peripherals on each startup or reboot especially during updates. I've resorted to having no external hard drive attached at all and using it on my PS4 which is now my main gaming console.

When starting up I have put my ear close to the internal hard drive (not actually opened up the console) to listen to it on boot. I can hear it spin up then when it gets to a certain point it stops spinning whilst a USB is attached, with no attachments the hard drive continues on and completes the boot. I've tried as an experiment to boot with different attachments on different ports then remove them at the point where it hangs but once it has hung it will not continue and can only power off.

Has anyone else had this issue or heard of it? I have looked through numerous forums and searches on google but nothing like this comes up at all. Any ideas what the problem is and if it can be fixed?

Sounds like something seriously wrong with your console tbh. Maybe it's motherboard related. Out of interest was the console dropped or damaged at all?

Hi, Thanks for your reply, sorry a bit late but this thing is making a mockery of me.

The Xbox One has been mothballed the past several weeks and not in use, yesterday my daughter wanted to play Minecraft. I hooked up the Xbox One and started as usual and let her play for about an hour. After she came off and as it was still on I decided to try inserting a movie DVD just out of interest to see what would happen. DVD inserted, I was then prompted to download and install the Blueray Disc app which I did. Before all this I hadn't even inserted a single disc for more than a year. The app then started and was playing the DVD movie. I was shocked and so tried to find a game DVD but since it's more than a year I have used any I couldn't find them anywhere, I eventually found one today but I am baffled as to where the rest are, but last night I tried a 360 game that I knew wasn't backwards compatible and it recognised it and informed me it wasn't compatible. Oh and the discs ejected properly when pressing the eject button without resorting to restarting the machine. So today I found Diablo III and inserted it, game updated and then played for 10-15 minutes before quitting. At this point the disc wouldn't eject properly and I restarted the machine. With the disc out I then tried the movie DVD but it didn't play automatically so I ran the blueray Disc app which then gave me an error that no Disc Drive was connected. Not that there was no Disc inserted but the actual physical drive wasn't recognised, though I could insert and eject the disc normally. I did a hard reset and tried any discs I could and all seemed to work properly. A DVD movie, Diablo III again and a compatible 360 game this time being Rainbow Six Vegas 2. All worked perfectly. Then with the DVD drive seemingly working again I tried inserting a wired controller on boot up, normally before it would hang but this time it booted properly.

I'm flabbergasted... Could it be a software issue which has resolved somehow after updates? Or intermittent connection somewhere between the DVD drive and motherboard?
At first I thought the laser died but it's having no problem now reading discs.
