Xbox One (S) Atmos and bitstreaming update incoming

This was announced in Microsoft's Windows event today.

Will be available for both Xbox One models, but obviously only the S can play UHD disks.

Better late than never but i bet it will be limited in some form. Probably 2 channel sound or something.

My point is there has to be some hardware limitation the reason why it wasn't implemented from the start and now they have figured out a way around it via software.

Probably licensing deals not done in time. The reason ps4 does not not offer 4k blu rays as well is probably nothing to do with its hardware and everything to do with licensing costs.

Or maybe they simply weren't high on the priorities list and are features that are only now being finished? There's a substantial list of other features that fall in to that category on both the PS4 and the Xbox One. The Xbox has had it worse, largely due to the chaos caused by that E3 a few years back.

Whatever the reason, Atmos is being added. Can't really see any reason to assume it will be anything other than complete.

Seems to work ok with my non-s Xbox One, both for DTS-HD and TrueHD. Seriously hope the capability is extended to Plex, I am sure the app would need an update but it depends on whether MS have done the same as with 24p playback and limited to bluray only.

Remember how long it took them to enable 3D Blu Ray support? I wasn't impressed. Got there in the end though

Looks like this was part of the new update today, states it passes through all new formats so looking forward to testing it out.
