I have joined this forum as i have planned to build a gaming rig in the new year, i have been out the loop for sometime thanks to moving to MAC and console gaming currently on PS4 after years on the XBOX.

The cost of the PC is build just keeps increasing, with all likes of OS, peripherals, desk and so. This hasn't scared me off, has just forced me into looking at 2nd hand items or dead end CPU paths like the AMD FX series To make my budget go that little bit further. which i have been offered a 8350 for £75.00 and i even almost brought on off amazon the other day with one of there flash deals with a wraith cooler for £109.00. But held off as been waiting to see boxing day sales bring for me?

Anyhow, last night was round a friends and he just brought a Xbox one S and has nice little set up his desk, with a 27 inch curved monitor. He goes on to explain that Xbox will soon allow you to use a keyboard and mouse what will be awesome. He also mentions that he hasn't used his PC for months, most likely due to the having his new toy to be honest.

This had me thinking the main reason for me building a PC is for me to have a dedicated area for me to game at. Whilst the wife and kids watch TV at the weekends. So i am currently thinking about setting up a desk, with a monitor or tv with the playstation and a Xbox. For the time being, whilst i wait to see what Zen, intel bring to the table and build a PC next year once the CPU's have been out a while.
Taking into consideration the price of a Xbox one S with a game and 2nd controller is £249.99 making it tempting. Get HALO 5, Gears of war and battlefield 1 and i am sorted for a few months. Whilst i save and keep watch on whats on going with the new CPU's for later on.

a good gaming PC from scratch is at least £1,000, maybe more if you need monitor, speakers, desk and the like

even that isn't top of the range as just the graphics cards are £400 depending on spec (some even more)

I was in the same boat and ended up with the xbox and a new TV

Scorpio is out next year, which for me personally is good enough (and who knows, maybe MS will do a deal with Oculus Rift for some tasty VR)

If you just want a machine to play games on and aren't allergic to controllers then a console makes a lot of sense, certainly in value terms.

Don't count on being able to use KB/M on console properly.

I bought a PS4 this week for similar reasons. My current PC is being a complete PITA at the moment, and being sick of trying to troubleshoot it / even comprehend spending money on a new one this close to Christmas / my wedding early next year.

I am mildly allergic to controllers, specifically for FPS games, but with stuff like Bloodborne and Last of Us, for £150, it's a nice little go to that "just works"

I wasn't even looking at £400.00 GPU's, been looking at RX480 and GTX1060. Most of the builds are coming in around £1000 over all. Thats a lot for a gaming machine. I really miss playing strategy games like total war, i have found they don't work well on consoles another reason i was looking at a PC. But a £1000 is a lot of money, and the stress when the PC fails and crashes.....

I already have a PS4, which i brought as i wanted to try a different console and to be honest i am still not a fan. Better games on the Xbox and controllers specially for FPS games. Getting head shots with PS4 controller just seem that little harder than the Xbox controller. Still no match for a keyboard and mouse though.

wut?

A PC to rival the Xbox/PS4 is more towards the £400-500 range. The 480 / 1060 are more than capable of outputting 60fps at 1080p which is what the Xbox and PS4 play at (though that's not strictly true as it downscales some games!)

A PC is more expensive upfront but you'll be saving a good £15-20 on games as you can get the CD Keys quite cheap.

well, if you want a PC for gaming chances are you aren't speccing it for console performance :p

I mean a decent gaming motherboard with k i5 chip is £300, then another load of cash for ram, ssd, case, psu before you even start on the graphics card

The xbox one s is £200

My personal opinion is that there was a fairly long period of time that PC gaming was worth the premium over console gaming in that the extra margin of performance was worth the extra cost as it could often make a bad looking/running game on console look great on PC. For me, The current gen is plenty good enough. Good enough that I don't want to pay the extra £100s to make the games look better. I'm more than happy with the PS4 (now pro)

Not a bad idea. I will say that you will notice games that run at 30 fps and they might be difficult to play. That combined with the apparent lack of patterns on a compulsory boss is why I've dropped Bloodborne.

You will also miss out on various other types of games that consoles don't simply do like RTS and various PC exclusives.

As someone who plays both PC and consoles, I'd recommend keeping a console around for the exclusives, provided the exclusives aren't on PC and are numerous enough to warrant buying that console. Hence why I'm yet to buy an XB1 myself. Almost bought one around GoW4 launch, but the micro-transactions in that game upset me too much and there were issues with the pennies. In that respect, if you don't have one yet get a PS4 or a Nintendo WiiU (or just wait for the Switch which is apparently going to be a bargain at ~£250ish).

I moved from PC gaming to my Xbox One, and now One S. Can't say I miss the PC.

That’s how i felt when i moved to console only with the original Xbox the crystal version when i brought that. Stayed with them xbox through to the 360, then for some reason brought a PS4, got some good games and have enjoyed it, but it lacks certain games like HALO and Gears what i really miss playing.
