So I'm currently on what I believe is now my 4th or 5th Xbox 360. The first were all replaced by Microsoft each time they went wrong.

Last December I bought a new one from ****, which this time was an Elite with the latest chipset. It's been fine until recently.

Whenever I switch it on, it does one of the following:

- Doesn't recognize that there is any disk in the drive.
- Thinks that a game disk is a DVD, attempts to play it and does nothing.
- Comes up with a message saying that "This Disk needs to be played in an Xbox 360"... (well duh! That's what I'm trying to do!)
- On some games, it will come up with an error message not long after starting saying "This disc is unreadable, please clean it and check for scratches" or some such. However, I've tried cleaning the discs and there are no scratches.

Now in the past, I'd always sent my consoles off to Microsoft who then send you back either a new one, or in the case of my last few a refurb.

I've still got my receipt from **** and I believe this is valid for a year as a warranty. Would that be correct?

What I'm wondering is whether I can return it to ****?
As that would for one be quicker and less hassle, and secondly would they not also replace it with the newer Xbox 360? As presumably they don't carry brand new Elites anymore?

Thanks

That was a whole lot of typing just to say my drive is fooked.

If you have 12 month warranty still yes you can take it back to Game & they will replace it, Anything over 12 months & you'll have to send it back to Microsoft.

DVD Drive is fubar.

My Jasper Arcade did exactly the same at just over 11 months. Took it back to my local catalogue shop expecting them to send it back to M$, but it was store swapout. No arcade's in so I took store credit and pre-ordered a slim for launch day which was a couple of days later.

Try Game and hope they swap it out.

You can actually replace the laser in the drive fairly cheaply/simply. Something to consider if you're out of warranty.

It's not out of warranty, hence why I asked about if I can just return it to the shop.

Try holding the console on a 45 degree angle when closing the disc tray. Has worked for me the past 4 months or so :p

It's always something isn't it! :p

My last faulty Xbox you switched it on and it did nothing. You had to leave it running for a few mins to 'warm up' before switching off and on again and it worked!

I think I might just try returning it to Game then.
I guess I can probably just transfer my gamerprofile and most of my saves to a memory stick.

Well if you're so sure, what is this thread in aid of exactly.

If you read the thread, I asked because I was unsure whether I can return an Xbox to the shop due to being faulty, as in the past I'd always sent them to Microsoft. Secondly, as I stated whether returning it to the shop would also mean there is a chance they might give me the newer model as the replacement.

Is that alright with you?

Right... only just got around to taking it back today, as I have been too busy with work lately.

The console had got worse and had reached the point where it pretty much didn't read games at all. I took it back to the shop, they plugged it in to confirm that there was an issue.

I was told they would only exchange it for a new one, so he went out back to get one. He was gone a while and came back with a 250gb Slim and said they had no Elite's left, so was that alright?

OF COURSE!
Plus it had to be given with a game for some reason... so I got a copy of Medal of Honor for a tenner.

Pretty pleased with the customer service... as I was worried they would fob me off with some second hand Elite or something.
