Looking for christmas present ideas for my ten year old son. He's already hinted that he'd like Skylanders and Battlefield 3, so that's no problem. But he's quite into his rpg's and has probably played dragon quest 9 on the ds more than any other game this year.

Any good rpg's anyone can recommend? It doesn't have to be a recent release, just a decent one to keep him entertained. I was thinking maybe Final Fantasy XIII or something with more of a manga look.

Final fantasy 13 was awful. How about the mass effect or dragon age series? Good western rpgs although dragon age 2 was quite poor.

Those would probably be my choice for myself, Dragons Age Origins is the game I'm playing at the moment. Missed it when it first came out but I'm really enjoying it. Also fancy catching up with both Mass Effects in time for the 3rd one coming out.

Don't think my boy is so keen on that style though, I tried him with The Knights of the Old Republic and he played it a bit but lost interest. Think he needs something with a more cartoonish look to it. I'll bear it in mind what you said about FF XIII, the reviews are very mixed.

The fable games are good and child friendly.

TBH he's been playing Battlefield and Gears of War. I don't think "child friendly" is too high on the list of priorities!

Mass Effect and Dragon Age are good shouts, though of course both of them have some heavy political backstories (especially Dragon Age), and sexual relationships between the player character and others.

Well if he enjoys the Dragon Quest games then Blue Dragon is perfect for him, really lengthy and good RPG in the same style as Dragon Quest :)

There is also tales of vesperia which is a decent j-rpg. Can be downloaded from the marketplace since second hand prices are high.

Thanks, I've bought Blue Dragon already on ebay, got it for £9 new, so a bargain. If he works his way through that, I'll see if he's interested in the game you mentioned.

That's definitely an option, but which one, is it ok to jump right into the 3rd one, I'm guessing so as the stories are separate, right?

They're seperate but the 3rd one is the weakest and shortest of the bunch. I'd actually suggest grabbing Fable 1 from XBLA, it still looks pretty good and plays well. If not that then Fable 2 is really good, Fable 3 isn't terrible but it's very repetitive and nowhere near as much fun.

Skip to Fable II you can pick that up for a fiver, child friendly or not it's a brilliant game.

Ps Get the classics edition as it contains the dlc on the disk.

Surely Mass Effect's content isn't all that apropriate with the sexual undertones/scenes?

I get the argument that he;s lpaying gears of war... but that's gunning Aliens. In my warped mind that makes it ok, but copping off with Aliens... not so appropriate :D

Fable is brilliant! Fable 2 that is, I love the fable series to be honest :)

I enjoyed FF 13 for a while, until I got midway and just lost interest entirely.

Oblivion is my fave game of the current generation, which is about to be stopmed out by my increasing love for Skyrim...
