Xbox series x download speeds

Hi, just feeling a bit curious

Downloaded a game for my boy today on his series x, the download speed maxed out at 290 mb/s.

We are on 500 mb/s fibre, and I do get a consistent 450mb/s pretty much all the time, rarely does it go much below 400, but does regularly get to 500.

Anyway, the series X is connected to the router via a gigabit ethernet switch, no other devices were downloading at the time. Once the download finished I done a speed check and was seeing 485 download speed via WiFi on my phone.

Any my question is, why can't the Xbox download at the full available speed? Is it the ethernet switch? The server downloading from? Limitation of the Xbox ?

Just curious really

Yeah, it's the console or their servers. I usually get around 250Mbps and its literally a meter away with line of sight to the router. My phone gets almost the full 900 in the same spot.

It's the MS servers, I have 1Gbps and download speeds were always poor (relatively speaking) when downloading PC Game Pass games. It's not like they're even just being capped at a certain speed either, the speeds end up all over the place.

I've had fibre 900 installed and I'm maxing out at 110MB/S on steam, Rockstar etc but on the Xbox app I can't get more than 80MB/S. The speeds are very inconsistent too, they'll drop and rise constantly whereas other clients reach a max speed and stay there until downloads complete.

I know there's a load of apparent fixes posted for slow speeds but like others have said I think it's down to Microsoft's servers. Ridiculous really considering how large they are as a company. You'd think they'd have servers that could cope.

First world problems I know lol....

I'd have thought they would want fast servers so people can go on, download and get off again so they're servers don't get too clogged

Similar experience here with No One Internet via Cityfibre 1Gig. I think BT used to have slightly better speeds on their Openreach 1Gig package. Maybe they have dedicated cache servers in some of their exchanges for Microsoft as they also sold game pass in the bundle... But yeah - it's disappointing. I also remember that the speeds were better when I set up the console the first time. Maybe they give priority to new consoles to make the setup a smoother experience.
