Xbox VGA cable - can I run the phono through my PC's line in?

I picked up an HDMI cable recently, on.ly to discover my 360 has no HDMI port. So on the advice of forum folk I picked up a VGA cable to run it through my monitor, but the red/white phono has no home - there's no such input on my speakers, and I ordered a phono to 3.5mm jack. Will I be able to run this into my computer's line in and play the sound through my PC speakers, or has something gone wrong again?

Works fine, i used to use the same setup.

Mine was set up this way, I now have xbox > HDMI > Monitor > Line in to laptop > Headset. Sounds a lot better for some reason.
