xbox360 as a dvd player

As dvd player it was totally poor before the recent update which scales the video to your resolution, where before it wouldn't. The quality is brilliant now and enough to make me move my sony dvd player into my mums room.

On the CD side of things, it can play music cd's as it has a sort of cut down WMP on it with visualisations and the lark as well as connecting to a MS version of CDDB iirc. I rarely use the 360 for listening to cd's so the others will know more.

Given that MS intend this to be a media machine it can handle anything.

I have watched a couple of dvd's on the Xbox 360 now at 720p definition on my Sammy.

Very pleased with the quality. In fact I think the pictures better on that setting on the 360 than watching it via component on my Philip progressive scan dvd player.

Never tried cd's.

Since the patch i've been using the 360 as my main dvd player and am very happy with it. So much so that my new upscaling Oppo is up for sale.

on the quieter films you may overhear the 360's fans spinning, but other than that its a really great lttle dvd player

I find my 360 powers a lot of the fans down when I play DVDs and it's pretty quiet.

As others have said it makes a very very good progressive DVD player and I have mine sat in the main room below my 32" Tosh LCD (32WLT66). I even bought the proper MS remote though you don't need to (unlike ye olde XBox) and can use a controller.

Does the 360 play all regions? If so i might use it for my DVD playback when i get my new setup.. As my existing Panny only has S-video output..although is a great DVD player despite that.

thanks for all the replies

1. would new xbox already have the latest patch or would i need to download it

2. i'm planning on using the vga input on my 32 lcd (hyundai q321...apparantly vga is awesome on this set) but on the sound side how would i connect up the 360 to my amp (denon 3805)

Since my update the 360s playback is really very good and for a console its outstanding it has replaced my panasonic dvd player that cost me £320 18 months ago

Not bad for a console @ £200

The VGA cable has phono out (Red and white cables) and a 2.5mm phono jack converter.

Am I the only person who thinks it's rather poor?

It's loud, audio lacks clarity and without a remote it's difficult to control.

A £60 player like the Toshiba SD360E beats it hands down.

You know tunney, you've made me appear after swearing to stop posting here. What an absolute crap statement. I find the 360 to a great player and sound is awesome. The clarity is superb (as is sound). You are being a fussy git, that's what.

"oh it lacks this, theres a slight blur there" - it's total rubbish. The 360 is a perfectly ample DVD player. Your the sort of person who'll spend £40000000000 on a digital cable and say "omg look at how good this is" - just because it cost a lot. Difficult to control? WTF? It's easier than playing a fisher price (sp) game for christ sake. Oh and loud? So you (presuming your some anal AV buff) watch your films on such a low volume that you can here it? I know for one that I can't even tell it's on (other than the lights on the front) when watching a film.

I just find it amazing that you can call it poor. The difference between it and a top of the line one is minimal...yet you call it "poor". Anyway, having actually compared it to a superb panny dvd player on a panasonic 32LCD500 LCD I can safely say that it's a good player. It's rare I post here but idiotic posts like Tunney's enrage me (oh and sorry for spelling I've had about 6 pints and am not purposely trying to mispell things!).
