i bought me a xbox 360 at start of the week so i could play GTA as couldn't wait for it to come out on PC if ever.

anyways. i've got a Dell 2407 and as the console came with a HDTV component cable i'm using that and it looked a bit... well, not as good as i was expecting. i can only choose 720p in the output option as i'm using the component cable i do believe.

borrowed flatmate's copy of forza while he was in uni and played that for a while and couldn't help noticed the quality wasn't that great either.

then not that long ago i went into his room to see where he was on GTA as i'm a few missions ahead so went to boast and noticed how sharp and crisp the picture quality was!!

he does have a 22" samsung HDTV so already its got a lower resolution than my monitor but he is running his 360 via HDMI cable. would it be the lower res. or cable that makes his look so much better than mine?

I would think it is because he is running at his native resolution, your native res would be 1080p, If you went for the vga cable and set the res to 1920x1200 yours would probably look a lot better, it would be using the gpu to upscale and not the poor upscaler used by the display

cheers for quick replies.

VGA would be handy as both my 240*'s are running off my PC via DVI.

just a quick question though would there be an improvement if i used a HDMI cable and just put a DVI converter on the end or would it be same as standard VGA?

vga cable expensive i'm guessing as its M$ ;-p

The only problem with using a HDMI cable is I'm not sure how you'd get sound from the 360 as the HDMI cable alone will only carry video as your monitor is just going to be using a DVI port which doesn't do audio.

You can mod your component cable though and have both plugged in at the same time...though I'm not sure if this'll work without an optical audio solution.

I actually prefer vga to hdmi, HDMI is very sharp, almost too sharp, i like the way vga smoothes off the edges, also on my tv i get much deeper blacks through vga especially when setting the reference levels to expanded

just had a look for the cable and on many sites it says:

* High-definition connection for TVs and monitors with VGA inputs
* DV-15S Standard VGA Connector
* Video outputs settings of 480p or 720p
* Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound output

is there no point if its still only a 720p output signal.

just to throw in my two bits worth. I was having the issues with image quality.
Switched to VGA, haven't looked back. I had never been online to recieve updates. Mine would only set to 1920x1200 after I had recieved an update.

So if you haven't been online and still cannot getyour native res then that might be the reason.

Im being a bit of a nob pointing out a mistake, but 1920x1200 isnt 1080p. 1080p is 1920x1080. I agree that VGA is a good option though, my crappy TV only does composite so I plug my 360 into my 19" crt monitor and it looks great.

yeah i'm having trouble with my monitor again.

bought the official VGA cable and set to 1080p but my monitor its actually streching it to 1920*1200 and so cars in forza look like double decker buses :(

doesn't make a difference where i set monitor to 1:1 / Aspect / Fill - just keeps displaying it streched.

anyways of getting round this as its more annoying i think than having it at a lower res/quality.
