Hi guys, ive heard the news about the new 65nm chip coming out from next year, is it going to be straight away in 2007 or somewhere mid year?

If thats the case i wont hold off until January and i will get one now.

If anyone knows i would be most grateful.

Not sure on an exact date, but it should be soon for the 65nm die chips to start being used. It hopefully should make the 360 run a little cooler anyway.

I'd have thought it would be out in the first half of the year, maybe in line with price drops due to the new chip probably costing less to make.

I wouldn't expect a huge price drop though, even if Microsoft make a big saving on the CPU's, they will just make less of a loss per console rather than passing all of the saving onto the consumer.

This is just what I didn't want to hear since I was planning to get a 360 next week - the possibility of a cooler running crash free version just around the corner. Would be nice to get some concrete info on this, I'd probably wait if it was due january, but not if it's 6 months away.

I don't think the move to 65nm for the CPU would mean Microsoft would save anything, there's probably been a hefty investment made by them for IBM to reduce the core to 65nm, as well as preparing for production.

Also Chartered Semiconductor (the 2nd manufacturer of the XBOX360 CPU) will have to license further technology from IBM (as they had to do for the first cpu) to be able to continue as a second source.

Just googled and the timeframe for production to start is 'first quarter 2007'. Some of the articles were speculating that it could be a faster CPU as well.

Pointless waiting as surely they will sell up older stock first. You could be waiting a long while. Plus if you get one know by the time it goes belly up you will get a new one in return :D

That would be nothing short of stupid IMO. May as well go back to PC gaming if you are going to upgrade annually.
I would take that with a pinch of salt personally...

It probably could be a faster CPU, but they'll make it run the same as any other 360, else you'd have quite a rebellion on MS's hands.

To be honest, even if you wait for these new ones, who knows if they'll actually be more reliable? Maybe they might be even less reliable. Probably not, but I wouldn't be bothered too much about waiting for one.

The trouble is, every time they say they have a chip redesign, dumb news media mention a speed increase which is just rubbish.

The only benefit is that the new CPU might run slightly cooler, but I wouldn't hold your breath. For noise levels to be reduced to any significant degree, all parts need to run cooler, a smaller die size will not be enough.

Besides, all of this is probably 6 months+ away.

You'll never actually know if you got a 360 with a 65nm chip or not. You could wait till well after they anounce that they have changed production and still get one that has been sitting in the warehouse for several months and is an old model.

If you want one, then go out and get one. If it breaks with in a year, get a replacement.

The noise thing was a result of the first batch of 360s having a DVD drive that was spinning at full speed when ever a game was in, regardless of if it needed to or not.

My newest console does not do this. Its as quite as a mouse at all times.

There something on the Register concerning the 360 and the latest update. If the information on the register is true it could explain the constant lockups and crashes on my pre-update-reliable 360 that seem to plague it now. I have a question sort of relevent to this thread - This is my 4th 360 since launch so when does my warranty run out? is it from launch day or from the date i recieved my last console from repair? and furthermore whats the chance of having the new cpu in it?

The noise on mine does come from the case fans but only slightly. My DVD drive isn't too noisey. The thing is, noise reduction is going to be a slow gradual thing. As time goes on, they can use better and better components which make less and less noise. Even at launch, they vary in noise quite a bit.

Its from launch day not from the date of your last 360. Because if you think about it all anyone would do is trash their 360 2 weeks before the end of warranty and then get another year.
