Just got my console home tonight with the GOW and COD3 pack. I liked COD2 on the pc so thought it would be a good choice.

What's the best res people have found for gaming 720p or 1080i?

Also, this is a noisy little ******.....is there any way of quietening it down a little?

Not really any way of making it queiter, just turn up your TV :p

On the picture note, whatever looks best for you. Some people prefer 1080i, others 720p, depends on how good your TV is at doing either.

The resolution issue is a subjective one. It really depends what screen you have as to what resolution to use.

Obviously, use 720p if your screen is 720p native. If you TV is capable of 1080p via VGA input, then use that (although you need to buy an extra cable)

If your TV supports 1080i, take a look at it and switch to 720p, see which you prefer. Some prefer the additional resolution 1080i brings, others prefer the temporal resolution that 720p brings.

Personally, I'd take progressive over interlaced every time for a computer generated source, but a lot will depend on what you're displaying it on.

I'd say most of the noise is from the drive rather than the fans, so even watercooling would only achieve so much, and you could equally well just get quieter fans. Hardly matters since it's not worth losing your warranty doing either.

The noise is a bigger problem if you use it with your PC monitor cause you're likely to be a lot closer to it. Mine is stood on the floor and to the left of my desk. It's sat on a book so the carpet doesn't block the ventilation. Sat on the desk next to my monitor it was hideously noisy.

i was thinking that the 720p would be better than an interlaced picture, but i guess i'll have to give it a go.

I was quite shocked at the noise of the thing. Even when the drive stops the fans are quiet squely (if there is such a word).

I wondered whether those extra coolers you would get would cut the work of the internal fans and quieten them a little or whether they would just cause extra noise?

anyone tried them?

Just thought I would add that I have noticed a considerably drop in DVD spin noise with my console on its side.

Also I found that on my setup 1080i on certain games led to slowdown whereas 720p was smooth as silk (there was no difference in image quality).
