Hi all.

Had my sights set on the Viewsonic VA1912W. It came the other day from OcUK. But has to go back! Viewsonic have removed the DVI input without telling anyone :( Which I needed for my pc!

But I did get to try in with my 360. I tried it at different resolutions but none seemed to fit perfect.

So this has got me thinking about what monitor to now get that will do the 360's resolutions natively.

I would love to get another widescreen Viewsonic as I like their dead pixel policy, say the next size up: VX2025, but that is stretching the budget as well as stretching the image.

Or.. I could get a 19" non widescreen viewsonic and live without widescreen gaming, which I'd been looking forward to.

Or... Go for say the Philips 200W6CS widescreen and stretch the budget to the limit, but not the image (1:1 pixel mapping)

I just dont know

So what do you guys think?

Mick

The only LCD monitors that will fit the 360 with the correct aspect are 15" and 20" 4:3 screens...17" and 19" are 5:4 unfortunately. PC widescreen monitors are 16:10 whilst TVs are 16:9, so if you want run widescreen and maintain the aspect ratio (run in a small letterbox) then you'll need a monitor that boasts the option to maintain the aspect ratio correctly. The Dell screens do this (2005, 2405, 2007, 2407), and there're a few non-Dells that do...but more don't than do.

The 360 will output 1280x768 (15:9) which isn't a terrible match for 16:10...but you'll still suffer some vertical stretching.

Well I've just ordered a Philips 200W6CS for 274.99 notes.
Not from here sadly, and I did call OcUK to see if they would price match. But they said no straight away :(

Hopefully the screen will be OK with no faulty pixels, and at least I can run my 360 with 1:1 pixel mapping.

What is the 360's native resolution, Or best resolution to set it at, if that makes sense?
Or does it depend on the game?

Mick

The 360 renders in 720p (1280x720) then scales to the resolution you choose. Over VGA the modes available are:

640x480
848x480
1024x768
1280x720
1280x768
1280x1024
1360x768

So 1280x720 is optimal, but scaling is performed well by some screens.

i have a 2405FPW and the xbox360 runs fine on it aslong as im sitting about 2 feet back looks mint :D and thats with no fiddling of settings

I used to run my xbox on the dell 2405 and while great for 1080i games, 720p looked dreadful. Unfortunately my fav game PGR3 is in 720p :-(

You can really see the problems on it. The bridges in NY, the ferraris parked in my desert digs all looked VERY jaggy.

NFS:MW is in 1080i and looks fantastic but for some reason the frame rate is so dire it's virtually unplayable. I'm a big racing fan so in the end I moved the xbox to the downstairs plasma, sold the racing games and got GTR and a momo wheel for the PC :D

actually PGR3 renders below 720p initially (only just though), then it upscales to 720p then to your output res...it's naughty, and not standard for 360 games which are usually 720p native.

still 1280x768 on my 2005FPW looks awesome! and the game is great fun too.
