XboxLive - Name checking

Anyone know (apart from doing it at the Xbox itself) if there's a way to determine if a Live-Name is taken or not?

Might change my live name and was just curious as to whether someone else had though of it.

If I do change it, does my current one follow me around?

For example if I goto http://live.xbox.com/member/WhiteRoser it'll be me, if I change my name to http://live.xbox.com/member/GingGangGoolieWoolieWoofWoof, if someone put the WhiteRoser one it, it would automatically go to the new one?
