So I'm doing my quarterly codec update and here's the routine:

Update FFDSHOW:
This leads to DIVX (generic mpeg4 decoding) being broken for DiVX even when I untick the boxes to decode DIVX/MPEG4 using FFDshow

This also breaks QuickTime ALT from parsin MOV/HDMOV files properly leading to a program error in MPC and WMP.

Because of the above, reinstall DiVX.
Because of the above, reinstall QuickTime ALT.

I also had to install WInDVD8 because for some reason the built in DVD decoder in Vista does not like retail DVD films, it complains of a copyright error!.

It's all sorted, thankfully I was expecting all this from my last round of updating but this time round thought I'd share my routine :p

Why can they not make things simple? One standard decoder to rule them all!
(I know FFDshow can decode them all with a little help from QTAlt but I prefer the Intervideo decoder for DVD and the DiVX decoder for divx/xvid files. I also get smoother audio performance using the CoreAAC decoder as opposed to the liba version in FFDshow.

Meh...

I don't like codec packs like klite/community package etc because they tend to take over everything without giving you a choice.

FFDshow also has way more processing control which is better than klite

probably has divx for encoding :)

Yup :) - The encoder is quite good and I use it exclusively with VirtualDub and the LAME ACM codec for recoding home videos to DIVX and making use of my dual cores :p

Also the DIVX decoder appears to have smooother motion and better deblocking over any others I have tried.

I got a Samsung upscaling DVDrecorder which plays DIVX but has some issues loading some XVID files.
