Xd Picture card problem

I cant get a new 1gb xd picture card to work when connected to laptop or inserted in Fuji camera.
It says format failed.
Any ideas whats wrong ?

On the card there is a little gap at one side, there is no sliding piece.
Do i need to cover the gap MagicPirate?.
