General rule of thumb is the faster the write time the better.

It helps when taking multiple shots like bracketing or when you want to shoot a moving target with you finger held down on the button. Also means that you dont have to wait as long after taking a shot to preview it etc, another benifit is viewing and copying files from the camera onto the computer. I've got an Xd M card for my Olymus compact and its noticably slower than the SD card I use with my D50.

Most of the time i dont take 512mb on pictures in one go away :)
