Should the new forum feature a "like" system? (note: this is like only, not dislike)

I remember a similar thread about the careers subforum.

Lots of opposition about it but it's turned out to be a really useful area for a lot of people.

A like button isn't a big deal, it's a way of thanking someone or others acknowledging its a good reply. I can't see why people would really be against it.

Introducing a Thanks button is a bad idea. It leads to "Thanks whoring". The tone of the forum degenerates as most replies become smart arse unfunny replies attempting to get thanks.

I've seen it happen on another forums I frequent and it destroyed them.

Also with how busy this forum is, imagine having to scroll past 250+ likes to get to the next post. It'll just look messy rather than the clean look it has now.

I've voted no in the poll regarding "likes" - however I would have voted yes if it were disabled for the "Life" forums where I could see it being a disaster.

Hardware forums I feel it would work very well and would be an easy way for users to add some weight and validity to someones advice.

what more so than showing the number of posts?

I'd hope that the majority of OCUK wouldn't be thanking/liking those kind of posts anyway but saving it for proper advice and help.

People already do that in GD. It results in many people quoting said reply with "This" or +1.

That's not how it works. It always occupies the same space no matter how many likes you get. e.g.

ChrisD, LiE, Nate and 2800 others like this.

Exactly, if anything it could make threads easier to read as you won't have so many +1 style posts.

Why not a like/thanks button that requires a valid reason put into a comment. Not posted as part of the thread, but if someone wants to see why a particular post got so many likes or thanks, you can click into the "thanks" to see that it has some reasoning that can be quantified, rather than just a willy waving publicity contest?

I like this post because I agree with it and thanks for making me smile :)

So 'the powers that be' are going with it despite the majority of the so-called 'community' not wanting it.

Any chance of an option to disable it in our control panel?

Family friendly forum, dislikes aren't friendly. Don't see the big deal personally by not having a dislike button, if you don't like something you don't need to react to each post you disagree by spam clicking that dislike.

Then scrap the like button too!
