Just bought a xeon e5 2670 plus mobo for 300 of the bay.
Anybody have experience with getting a good OC out of these chips .
It is a unlocked multiplier test chip.

Cheers

I highly doubt it's unlocked in any shape or form. I have two ES Xeons, a 1366 and a 2011 and both are locked to heck.

Not only that but Intel derp the strap on 2011 so you can't touch that and my one won't even do a 102 fsb.

From the auction listing
Interestingly the chip has the following marking on it...intel confidential QBF5 2.6GHZ Costa Rica 313128105...Those in the know will realise this is a unlocked multiplier intel test chip

Now i dont no a lot about these chips but im just about to do a new build and thought id take a punt on something differant.

Well basically you've got a 5960x Ivy on your hands which is why I doubt so much that it's unlocked.

I just hope for your sake he's not talking about the turbo multi which is unlocked and can be set to always on, giving you 4 multi.

My Xeon runs at 2ghz and I decided to use it for my Hackintosh where it's as happy as a pig in excrement. Love sitting here running a encode and watching the cores all heat up in HWMON :D

Got double the score in a CPU benchmark of a 4670k, so a fantastic little CPU :)

I asked him if he OC it he said no but he said the mate he got it from said it will
Get to 3.5.
Got to wait a week for it then buy me 970 so I will report back.
And if u google confidential chips they are apparently engineers chips which
Are illegal to sell.

Yeah, hence ES, Engineering Sample.

They're supposed to be returned to Intel after testing and what not, but seldom are. People don't usually sell them though as it's as risky as hell as Intel have themselves well covered.

I've seen trays of them on Ebay before though.

What board did you get? phases are going to be crucial on that chip if you're overclocking it.

Intel DX79SR

Hmm, not so great then.

Mind you, it was about the best effort they ever made before calling it a day.

Ed. Should explain. That board was at least 200mhz shy of any other extreme board, IE the RIVE and MSI BBXPII.

Mind you, it has to be said, she's one sexy girl.

So it's a **** board?

What happened with this cpu then? Did it arrive? Any overclock?

Sorry ain't been on for ages.
Yhea arrived all working good, had a quick play and does seem to be unlocked
But bios kinda confuses me "not a expert when it comes to oc"
Any tips? Maybe I'll have another play with it soon.

Thinking I need to up the voltage but scared I will break it lol
