We have just acquired a new blade server from HP unfortunately with the purchased upgrades it has arrived in many boxes.

My boss has Installed most of the items easily enough but the processor, according to the bumpf that came with it, should be inserted and then the lever should close with zero force, however as soon as the lever is closed it is rather stiff from the outset, is this normal? Or what have we done wrong?

If you look at the CPU and look at the socket (where it goes into), there will be a notch (cut out of the cpu). Aslong as these line up your fine (If the current line of Xeons are anything like the Xeons the previous 10 years before them).

Source: I worked at Intel as a server engineer changing these buggars everyday.

Last Processor I installed wasn't this stiff. Everything looks fine and the insertion tool that comes with it only allows it to be inserted one way.

Well then what do you want us to do? Providing the socket matches the CPU (CPU buying 101), and the notches match - then push the lever down.
