Well I've discovered the joys of remote Desktop Web Connections and via this I've loaded WinSMP onto our server here. Twin 2.4 Xeons (prestonia)

Now I've never been able to load any core on the server direct. - I've run standard clients that have been up/downloaded from my workstation (see sticky) but that's all.

So I thought just maybe I'd try via RDWC, what with Cob parping me and all ;)
So I download a new copy of the instation file onto a network drive.
Open RDWC and log onto the server.
run the file - and it installs WinSMP on servers local drive.
do the install.bat bit with the double password
Cut and paste the looping batch file (editing it to new path)
and it downloads the core and a WU and starts crunching. Result!

but most bizare it's got all my -config details without me entering them

Edit: I should put, that I access the server via http://server name/tsweb/***.htm

Let me know if it makes the deadlines. I have one of those but didn't use it because I assumed it wouldn't (and it's too loud to run during the summer anyway).

80 hours/WU then. I'll consider it, but I'm liking the lower bills (and less noise) I'm getting from not running that PC, so will have to think about that.

80 hours a WU??

Why bother? Assuming you got a 1760 point WU, you'd get only 520PPD if you ran it 24/7. The extra noise, heat etc seem hardly worth it.

I agree, though for a work system with someone else dealing with the bills, probably not a problem. Mine's at home and even at 10% of daily output I'm not convinced, though I may wind it up for a week or two to slow down some impending stomps.

Running up your work's bills, wearing out their equipment and wasting electrickery is not worth 520PPD.

My brother's 3700+ could knock out more point than that.

OK, maybe not right now, but the fact it could get anywhere close with far less effort, energy and noise suggests what shadow is doing is a waste of time!

Exactly - and given the age of the prestonia CPUs, who really cares if it ends up murdering them - especially if the box is normally on anyway. :)

errrm, thanks for the input guys :p

I'll be stopping crunching on the beast tomorrow having completed it's one and (probably) only smp unit. SB has the truth of it, not worth the lecky or the greif of it dieing

Ahh takes me back, best server I ever crunched on was when I was burning in a newly built Quad dual core opteron box that was going to be a standby Oracle server.

OOh

Intresting log file - looks like my xeon didn't make the deadline (I stoped it crunching durring office hours as file access time were slower then normal and I was getting complaints - our working files range from 1-20MB) but I still was given the points :D

wow that is pretty odd - stanford may be interested to see that it basically ignored the deadline :o

glad you still got the points for it as if that's happening to others they'd have got annoyed if it didn't start a new WU and didn't give points either - of course it would be better if it worked properly :p

Even Uncle F call the server I have here as 'exotic' :p
Then added to that there's the SS factor that everything works for me in a different way to everone else.

The law of averages says that at lease once it should break to my favour, after all the non-favourable times I've messed up :p:D
