I've always used KDE (never got on with Gnome) but last night I tried out Xubuntu for the first time... Wow - this thing absolutely flies, even on my Athlon 2600+ with only 1GB Ram! I never realised just how bloaty KDE was until now. Anyone else here using XFCE?

Yeah i'm thinking of switching over myself, but i'll see even more of an increase since i AM using gnome :p.

I've got a pretty bloaty Ubuntu server, and for the few times i'll need a GUI XFCE is a much better option :)

The more features you have the more bloated the GUI. I have a fast machine so Gnome [with Compiz enabled] flies along.

XFCE will be going on my server when I get around to buying a motherboard. While I like the idea of pure command-line I just know I will end up wanting/needing a GUI. Even if just to make stuff simpler :p

Been using XFCE (Xubuntu) for 3 or 4 months now, mainly since I run on a rather decrepit laptop that struggles to run Gnome/KDE :( It certainly runs very smoothly without any tweaks on a measly XP2400 with 256Mb of ram (and some of that is shared to video :( I really must upgrade my lappy sometime :D )

yea, i'm very impressed that with a bit of effort I've managed to resurrect an old 1.4 P4 system with 128 Meg of ram and a geforce 2!

Aside from the two small niggles i mentioned before, it is very impressive. Got this old hunk of junk to boot quicker than my main rig that uses gnome.
