Hey guys, ive got a X-fi Extreme Music card coupled with some newly aquired creative fatality hs800's (not my first choice but they are a gift) and it just doesnt sound right, not sure what it is, but to get any decent volume i have to crank it all the way up. Im using Vista 64bit with the latest creative drivers, none of that console launcher lark just the audio control panel. Anything i need to mess with to get them sounding okish.

1. Check system volume settings.
2. Make sure x-fi is set to entertainment mode, and to the appropriate number of speakers for your purpose .
3. Your headset isn't that great as you know.

Was using my 5.1 speakers before hand, but i got a lot of complaining from the neighbours saying it sounded like ww3 keeps kicking off, so for some reason i came home to find these sitting on the back door porch with a note saying "from your neighbours, now we can relax in peace" lol. as for the settings ive got all them checked and double checked.

Is it just volume that bothers you?

A headphone amp might do the trick. Maybe a FiiO e5?

How to set up the headphones depends on how you want to use them. For gaming, you'll generally want the following audio control panel settings:

Game mode, speakers set to headphones, enable EAX, Enable CMSS-3D and set MacroFX and Elevation Filter to auto.

Then go through Windows Control Panel, Hardware and Sound, Sound, Select your Speakers and Configure. If you're using a game with hardware sound (DirectSound3D or OpenAL) set speakers as Quadrophonic or some stuff won't work properly. If your game has a software sound engine you can set it to 5.1 or 7.1.

Go back to Audio Control Panel and check that Speakers are still set to headphones (if not you may need to check a box saying something like 'optimise for headphones' or desynchronise from Windows' or even install the X-Fi Console)

If your game has audio settings set it to match Windows (some just do it automatically).

And you're away - simulated surround sound over your head set with a few added features (such as elevation effects) that you couldn't get with 5.1.

For legacy games (XP days) you may also need to run alchemy to allow them to use hardware features.

Have fun.

Shouldn't need an amp with those, I have the xtremegamer and HS-800 too and they're more than loud enough, easily. Checked the in-line volume control on the headset?

Righto Uriel i check all of those, and yes alex the in-line volume is cranked up..you know its probably down to me not being used to headset/phones, but im hoping those settings uriel posted will at least improve it a little.
