Basically, ive built my new PC yesterday, but i didnt order my GFX card (waited for my student loan to come through)

So anyway, i was going to buy a 5850 and go Xfire later but, i ordered a 650W Corsair PSU and it only has 2 PCI power things.

So i can only run 5850. But i was wondering what would be better for gaming...1x 5850, or 2x 5770??

Also whats the difference between cheaper models i.e Sapphire and the more expensive XFX cards?

2 x 5770 = faster, but gives slight stuttering and not all games scale well. Plus more noise, heat and power.

1 x 5850 = slightly slower, but no stuttering, no scaling issues, runs quieter with less power required and less heat produced.

As for different brands, as far as I'm aware all cards are made by Sapphire, only difference is sticker and warranty. I'd recommend Asus if they ever had stock (3 years + overclocks covered), but seeing as they aren't getting cards out at the moment go Sapphire.

Well they only have XFX cards and VTX cards.
Was considering the XFX 5850 but would you suggest saving £30 and get the VTX 5850?

I'd go for the 5770's, i did and have been very impressed. I don't notice any stutter, have no heat problems (cards run at 62-65 degrees under full load) and my asus cards are whisper quiet.

I've been running a crossfire setup for about a month now, all that extra fps is nice in games that scale well. but the issues and stuttering on some games has caused me to be a much bigger fan of single card solutions. you might lose some fps to 2x5770s, but with a small OC on the 5850, you won't miss them and you won't have to deal with dodgey crossfire issues :)

also, you'll be able to grab another for cheap if you ever feel like it :)

Stuttering is a crossfire issue.

As for the temps, it's true that it's not as much an issue with the 5XXX series, but more things producing heat inside a closed environment means more heat, you can only push so much out.

As for the VTX, I'd avoid them personally, 1 year warranty plus I don't know of anyone returning one, some places (Powercolor anyone) can be a pita for RMA. I'd still suggest Sapphire, it means waiting a couple more days, but you get double the warranty this way.

EDIT:
Also, go find some threads to post on in the general discussion board, only 13 posts until you get free next day delivery :)

Agree with the above although its early days and so far have only played Fallout 3 but with no problems and my temps(vapor-X cards) are 34-35c idle at 35% fan speed and 55c gaming in Fallout 3 at 50% fan speed. Using 9.12 hotfix installed over 9.11 with no problems so far. Well pleased.:D
