XFX 1050W Black Edition Pro 80 Plus - DOA?

Hi all,

I purchased the Black Edition XFX 1050W Pro from Overclockers back in January, and only just found the time to install it yesterday.

Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be working - when I startup the computer with everything plugged in, the fan goes on for less than a second, and then nothing happens. I know there is some power because of this, and also the fact that my motherboard light is on, but I'm assuming there is something wrong with the voltage on the rails. I plugged in just the motherboard, CPU and fan connectors, and still nothing happens. I ensured I only have one stick of RAM in at a time, and the same thing again.

I then decided to put my old Corsair PSU back in, and it all works completely fine.

Does this mean that the PSU was DOA, or is there potentially some other weird explanation behind this? I'm not sure what else to test.

It could well be DOA. This can and does happen, even with the best PSUs. I assume you were running onboard graphics as well?

If the old PSU powers your system fine, then it does point towards a PSU issue.

What's the rest of your system spec?
 
Yeah I can imagine it's just bad luck. Even though it is supposedly an excellent PSU, not every single one ever produced is going to work!

Indeed, my motherboard has an integrated graphics chip, so I thought I might as well remove my new Sapphire Radeon Nano from the equation to ensure that isn't causing the problem.

When I replaced it with the old Corsair PSU, I literally just plugged in exactly the same connectors, so I had a feeling at that point that it's more than likely a dead PSU.

Rest of the spec is:

CPU - Devils Canyon Core i7 4790K
Motherboard - Asus Maximus VII Impact
RAM - 16GB DDR3 Corsair Dominator
GPU - Sapphire Radeon Nano 4GB
Audio - Audioquest DRAGONFLY V1.2 USB DAC
SSDs - Crucial MX100 512GB and Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

As you can see, not a bad system at all, and definitely not going to draw enough to damage either this PSU or my 750W Corsair CX750.

I guess I should probably request an RMA from Overclockers and take it from there. I just didn't want to risk it without getting other opinions, in case they tested it and it worked fine for them!
 
If it was a bare minimum setup and you still didn't get anything out of it, then it sounds like a faulty PSU. You just ended up with a lemon that missed quality control.

Out of interest, why were you upgrading to a 1050W PSU? Unless you plan on upgrading your whole system to an SLI/Xfire system you'd be fine with a 550W/650W PSU.
 
Yeah I think that's probably the case. Great to get your opinion on it, so thanks for that :)

I purchased it because I was seriously considering a crossfire setup. A few weeks later, I heard about the huge drop in price of the Radeon Nanos, which gave me the opportunity to slim down and buy a mini-ITX case whilst dramatically decreasing power consumption. Annoyingly, if I had have tested the PSU within the first 30 days of purchasing it, I would have been able to send it back for a full refund, and then saved some money. Obviously now I can only send it back for repair! You win some, you lose some I guess!
 
I was also thinking that this issue could be one of the PSU cables being defective - either the CPU cable or the motherboard cable. Annoyingly my old PSU is semi-modular, so I don't have any spare cables to test with!
 
You should still be able to send it back for replacement. Go ahead with the RMA. If it is approved as faulty, I'd expect you to get a replacement under warranty as only a few months old.

That PSU has a 5-year warranty, unless it was b-grade of course in which case it only has a 90-day warranty.

Modular cables are not interchangeable. Although it might look like the cables connect to the same pins, on the internal side of the PSU there could be wiring differences. If it is a faulty cable, then the PSU is still classed as faulty.
 
No problem. Good luck with the RMA. I can't see there being an issue given that you only bought it a few months back. Go to OCUK first and see what they say.
