XFX 260 Black Edition PSU Question

Hello,

Sadly I am not that experienced in building my own systems, overcloacking etc, very much a novice.
If anybody could be so kind though to help me with a couple of questions:

I have just brought the XFX260BE and use a Corsair HX620 PSU.
My question is simply is this enough? I read on the box XFX recommends a 630W PSU?

Also if I may ask, I have a standard case big fan on the side big fan on the back, is this enough now to keep the system cool now, it was with my previous card (8800 GTS 640MB).

I may change to the HX1000 at some point which would be fine, but for now this is what I use.

Thanks in advance for any advice you give.

Your Psu has plenty of power for your system, I'm running the same card on a 450 Corsair PSU with a water cooled setup.

That PSU is more than enough mate. A HX1000 would be massive overkill, you wouldn't even need one of those for two GTX260s! :)

All the specs I have read state a minimum PSU requirement of 500w for single card configurations.

That's just the official line that Nvidia (and ATI) churn out since they are in league with the other manufacturers. :p

X-bit labs have a habit of checking the power requirements of most new hardware and they measured a standard gtx 260 as drawing 136.1W at load, a gtx 280 drawing 178W and even an overclocked Radeon HD 4870x2 only drawing ~274.7w at load.

Remember, you have to count all the other stuff in your case when working out what PSU you need... not just the GFX card!

Right, but the same guys clocked a system with an i7-965EE, x58 board, 3gb of ram and a WD hard-drive as using ~220W at load (I've taken off 65W for the idle 4870). With a gtx 280 that would be ~400w in total at load, with the lion's share taken from the 12v rails. Most of us don't have a top of the range i7 system though, or even quad-core CPUs for that matter so I think a blanket statement that 500w is the minimum required is completely false.

Installed very easy, bit short on space between the edge and the HDD bay :eek:
But all in all seems fine so far.

Just one odd question though.
I have the PDIF connection to the MB but that has 2 pins but the board has 4.

* +5V
*
* SPDIFOUT
* GND

Which 2 do I connect on the MB (Asus PK5 Premium)?

Thanks all again :)

Yes, sorry to add to this thread as well, but I was considering a 260 or 280, possibly in the new year.... and I'm running my rig on an Antec Neo 550w.

It's never hiccuped before, but I only have an 8800GT in there at the moment.

As I say, it's an Antec Neo 550w, running a C2D (although next year this will be changed to a quad, Q9650) 5 HDDs, 4gb (4x1gb), 2xDVD-RW, X-Fi Fatal1ty (with front bay), and a PCI Raid Card.

Do you think I'm pushing my luck?

Would I stand more chance of getting away with a 260 than a 280?
Or, wait for the new revision 260 to come out?

Thanks for your thoughts,
Vin.

Just got this card myself, running on an Enermax Liberty 620W. XFX specify a minimum of 550W supplying 40A to the 12v rail. Would imagine most quality 550s with decent ampage should cope tbh.

Another thing worth noting for prospective purchasers, for some reason XFX only supply one 6 pin pCIe to 4 pin molex converter, so if you've got an older psu without dedicated 6 pin PCIe cables chances are you'll need to order an extra converter with the card.

Although confident that my 620HX was up to powering my system (see spec in sig) i recently purchased a power monitor for £10 at a popular hi-street electronics store to measure the total power draw while playing games at load. Including my monitor, 2:1 audio system and modem i use about 620 watts at load.

So to answer your question, even with 2 260's your fine :)

I'm a bit concerned by that tbh, my OCZ 520W PSU only puts out 28A on the 12v rail, 40A seems like a huge requirement for a gfx card? Additionally http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine says I only need 380W even with my overclocked quad :confused:

Maybe I'll just try it on xmas day and order up a new PSU if I need one, I guess the worst that can happen is the system wont boot?
