Normal? This is in an Antec 1200 with every fan revved up to full and nice tidy cables.

you need to go into the ati overdrive and manually set the fan speed.
33% when you are desktop and 45% when in games works for me.
Idles at 42 degrees and goes up to 65 in games using these fan settings.
For me and my HIS 4870X2 anyways.

4870 1GB, Antec 300, 30% fan = idles at 45c. Haven't checked under load but increasing the fan past 30 drastically increases the noise.

Is there a way of changing fan speed programatically? I'd like to have 30% speed then increase by 5% for every 10c past 45c. Is this possible?

How do you do that in the 9.2 drivers, I can't see an option for setting it?

ATITool is a good program for doing exactely that, also useful for overclocking and artifact testing

Thanks. I'll give that a go. The card is reasonably quiet at 30% and I don't mind it louder when I'm gaming. Its weird that ATI haven't implemented something like this in their drivers.

With CCC you can create profiles and then assign hotkeys to them. I did this so as to have 30% when idle and 45% when gaming which seemed to do the trick and all it required was a couple of hotkey combinations to switch between them. I have now replaced the stock cooler with the Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo:) and find I dont need to do that anymore as cooling is far better at load anyway.

Catalyst Control Centre... geez its just not my day!

Great bit of advice by the way. I've set it up so I do 30% normally and 45% for gaming. Swap back and forth with hotkeys. Thanks!

Do you have a link for CCC? ATI Tools doesn't support newer cards

Catalyst Control Centre? It's part and parcel of the driver package... Go into the Advanced CCC first and then...

On the ATI Overdrive page you set whatever you require then at the top click Profiles and then Profiles Manager. In here you give the new profile a name, then go to the Activation tab and tick the box for hotkey assignment - select a hotkey combo to use and then save the profile and close. Do as many profiles as you need but I would recommend one for stock (say 30% fan speed) and one for gaming...45%?

Close out of CCC and then from your desktop try the hotkeys and you should hear the fan changing speed. Easy!:D
