XFX 4870X2 Squeals Like A Pig...

Hi all,

I haven't had much luck of late as I already have a faulty PSU (buzzes) and it looks like my 4870x2 is playing up also. I order my bits from Overclockers last Thursday and they came the next day. I couldn’t make out where the buzzing/squealing noise was coming from at first so I crammed my ear next to the psu and it was making some very odd noises, especially when I was downloading or running a benchmark.

I thought the noise was just coming from the PSU but it's also coming from the 4870x2. Especially when I run a benchmark (CSS vsync on/off) it squeals like a pig! It'll even make a noise for split second when I move a window on the screen or scroll down the page of a long document. It's incredibly annoying and I refuse to be told it's 'normal'.

Am I eligible for a replacement as I haven't even had it for 7 days yet?

Does anyone else have the XFX version of the card and if so is it silent?

Any one else had a similar issue with there’s?

I'm going to try it in my father-in-laws PC tonight to make 100% sure it's coming from the card.

Thanks all,

RoEy

Yes, it's normal. My Force 3D card does it, as does even my GTX280, to a small extent. As it's fully working, you are eligible to return it under DSR for a refund as you have changed your mind about keeping the product.

I actually think it gets better the longer you keep the card. When I got my X2, it was pretty noisy, and now I barely notice it.

Sounds like a capacitor doing that, I've the exact same card and it's completely silent.

Even when benching.

I had the same with my old 8800 Ultra and GTX's, very high pitched noise. Ended up RMA'ing them.

So it can't be normal then if yours is silent. It literally drives me mad.

Thanks for info.

Its cap buzz.

Many cards and PSU suffer with this. a quick google will show you there are LOADS of people with this problem.

My xfx gtx280 xt only buzzes a little when running games @ SUPER high fps. (cod2/coduo/crysis menus etc) its nothing to worry about its just luck of the draw

LOL nothing to worry about you say. You're not the one who has to sit next to it and cringe when hearing it. Should I really have to put up with that when someone else who has the same card has no noise whatsoever?

Dont worry about it my 4870x2 does it also in certain situations, and the GTX260 I had before did it too.

If you don't like it, return it or sell it.

Yes, you could RMA as many cards as you like till you get a silent one. As i said its luck of the draw.

Just bare in mind most companies charge about £15 repacking fee etc.

I know your pain because when i built my rig in the sig i had horrendous issues with PSU/GFX card squeal and ended up wasting a month of time/ changing PSU 3 times and gfx card once to resolve it. And the noise is still there a little bit (only when i put head next to the case can i hear it a little bit)

4870s do it, 4870x2 do it 260GTX do it and the 280GTX does it as well. Its luck of the draw I've had at least one of each of the above cards (3 each of the 260s and 280s) and 3 different PSUs and they have all do it.

Yep, both of the 260's i've had have done it.

Doesn't effect games at mid and lower fps but some game menus (S.T.A.L.K.E.R) which run at really high fps make the card squeal.

Thanks for info. I'm not paying any repacking fee. I'm not happy with the goods so it's simple, they go back. Just absolutely amazed that it has a problem like this. I'm beginning to remember why I went away from PC's for 2 years.

All this money spent to listen to a cricket and dog whistle in my machine. Funny thing is I actually want to water cool my system when I've had it working under air for a good month. Can you imagine how loud the noise would be then when the fans are under a fan controller and the cpu/gpu is under water? Christ...

I'm going to take it back until I get a quiet one. I'll move on from retailer to retailer if I have to. Does the GTX285 suffer from this?

Cheers all,

RoEy

It's been happening with Graphics cards for many years now. The first one I heard it on was a friends GeforceFX 5900 (Ha ha he bout one of these ) and since then I have heard and owned cards from ATI and NVidia in every generation that does it.

I doubt you'll get a successful RMA on it but you might be able to distance selling regs, you will have to pay a restock fee though (and your return guaranteed postage charge)

This seems to be a very common issue so the main question is why aren’t Nvidia / ATI doing anything about it?

Would be nice if it was advertised too saying 'not for people with working ears'.

A 285 will be quite a big stepdown from a 4870X2.

You've got to bear in mind that it's a problem that can affect any card.

I've never gotten it on any of my cards, but I know it exists.

My PC at work does it, if I have earphones in, there is a load of interference when scrolling pages and moving windows. My work PC has an Nvidia Quadro in it.

Yeah I hear that interference too but from the card not my speakers/headphones as I have unplugged them all due to the fact I thought it was coming from them initially. It's a shame because I love the card too. I'll test it on loads of different games tonight to see what happens. It's not like I'm not giving it a chance and the last thing I want to do is take it back but I will if I have to.
