My 4870 has died (RIP, best card I ever owned), and I have been offered a 2gig 4890 as a replacement for £150. Is this a good deal, or could I get something better for the same money?

The only games I use are FSX, Freefalcon 5, Arma 2 & OA, and Silent Hunter5.

I am interested, as I did think it sounded like a good deal.

I had been planning to upgrade anyway, and was considering a 5770, but the more I looked into it the more it seems as if the 5770 isnt as good as a 4870!

Your card could have easily have died at stock clocks, noway to know if overclocks had a detrimental effect on the cards life span, now if you were running at 90+ temps then I guess that could effect a cards longevity.

Nothing like that much. Although I did end up having to cable-tie a 120mm fan to it! I had a passive cooler on it and the original fan didnt cool it enough.

Maybe just wear and tear, it was nearly 2 years old.

Hmmm... It's a hard one. Tbh the 2gb memory won't do much for you over any other 4890... It is a good price, defiantly better than a 5770 for most uses. How about hold off for a month or so? ATI prices may well drop a tad. 4870 to 5770 is a bit if a side step.

Not sure of the relativeperformance of the 460 myself. I'm loving my Q6600 and 5850 setup at the moment
