XFX 5970 Black Edition

Are you an ambassador for the 'people' now? Do you speak on their behalf because they can't make decisions for themselves?

I've gone from a BFG 295 GTX (dual GPU) to a 5970 (dual GPU) and not had any problems with multi-GPU cards at all. You're making a decision based on other peoples opinions without actually using one of these cards yourself. Don't worry though you're not in the minority here, about 90% of users in the Graphics Cards sections will say the same too.
While there is no problem for 'you', there had been fair numbers of people with 5970/Crossfire 5850/5870 reporting they've been experiencing problems with crossfire; some people was so fed-up with their Crossfire not working as it should, even gone the extreme of selling the 5970/crossfire set-up and bought a GTX480. So even if you have no problem with your 5970, it doesn't represent every 5970 out there.

And I stand corrected that encouraging the OP to get a new 5970 right now is poor advise (no matter how great you think the card is), since 6990 will be out soon at around the same price point, and Cayman GPU's performance is much better for demanding games (i.e. Crysis, Metro2033) than the Evergreen based dual-GPU dropping down to the 20fps~25fps stutter hell.

Well, don't ve have another thread about performance comparision between various cards ?

So I would think that it all comes to the question for how much you can find the 5970. I wouldn't recommend buying prev generation card if 6xxx dual GPU will be out soon or if there exists almost as powerful single GPU solution, unless you can find 5970 for a price that will make performance/price comparision clearly better than for GTX 580 or the HD6990. (when it will come out) Me personally - I don't trust multi-GPU solutions, but that's just me.

ive seen black edition 5970 go for £315 on the auction site....id wait for 6990 definatley but 5970 is as good as a 580gtx and you wont get one of them for £315 just now......

Is that new or 2nd hand? Even if it was new, with it being sold by some random one man small shop you can pretty much consider it as no warranty cover, as they are not proper resellers acknowledged by the manufacturers.

its second hand but my point is thats a great price for that kind of power.....stand down marine....youve made your point....you hate the 5970.
me personnally i love it and the reason i know it was that price? because i was looking to buy another for quad xfire but im going to wait for the 6990..

does it matter if its second hand also...its been plugged into a motherboard for at most a year.....i doubt the seller has used it to prop his door open with

I don't 'hate' the 5970, I'm just pointing out that it is poor value...especially when pair of new 6870 or 5870 can be had for around £320~£340 ish with 2 years warranty; and for single card option there is the GTX570 which can be overclock to touching stock GTX580 speed. Also, 2nd hand 5970 are now going for like £250~£270 (price point which worth considering), so £315 is hardly a bargain.

And don't say I didn't warn you, Quad-fire scaling quite poorly and people who had gone down that route had nothing but disatisfaction. 5970 plus a 5870 in crossfire (Tri-fire) is the highest people would go for for the best result.

the scaling issue is what held me back in the end otherwise id have had 2 x 5970 and missed a gen..... where do you see them for £250 - £270? on the members market?

I think you're better off with the newer cards, 6970 or 570/580 as they got better min fps the last generation of cards. The min fps on the 5970 are terrible, I know because I had the xfx 5970 be for a few months before getting a gtx 580.

damn...cant get in there for another few weeks.....
bet its like an aladins cave of goodies in there....

Had an Accelero Extreme on it too ... wanted more VRAM so I have 2x6950s (to be flashed to 6970s) arriving hopefuly tomorrow which should go very well with my Dell ..

@ 1920x1080 1GB is fine though from what I have seen so it depends on what res you game at.
